Post-Bop is a modern jazz style that continues the distinguishing characteristics that separate jazz from the world of pop and rock; swing rhythm and extended harmonies (9th chords 11ths, altered chords, etc). Post-Bop grew out of the Hard Bop genre during the early to mid 60s as musicians such as Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock began to introduce more extended harmonies, abstract structures and looser rhythms in their playing and compositions. When Hancock and Shorter joined Miles Davis's quintet in the mid-60s, that group became the perfect vehicle for extending the boundaries of what could happen in a Post-Bop format. The Miles Davis Quintet albums, "Nefertiti" and "Sorcer", continue to be pinnacles of Post-Bop composition and performance. Some styles of free modal jazz, such as Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", are also part of the Post-Bop sound. Although there are still some musicians, such as Kenny Garret, who play in that style, mostly that sound has been fading since the early 70s. Of course, theory doesn't come close to explaining music. If music is a language, theory is just grammar. More important than grammar is knowing the vocabulary that comes from listening, with awareness, to great players, and playing as much as possible. Beyond grammar and vocabulary is the ability to communicate with listeners to "tell a story," and to reach an audience on an emotional, or even spiritual, level.

The drum book Skills & Fills has first been published in Holland and it became a great succes. It's written by Dennis Tideman who runs a drum school (Drumschool DT) for 20 years now. After years of giving drum lessons he came up with this drum book that is all about developing drum fills. The system that is presented in the book is accessible for a large group of drummers from amateur to pro. A lot of drum teachers in Holland use this book for their students, because playing fills is a very nice way to develop technique and rudimental capabilities. Also the individual creativity will be teased by using this system! Besides the more than 100 examples of tough linear* drum fills that come with the book, there is the unique Fill Generator, which gives you many possibilities to create your own drum fills! In addition to the E book, the Skills & Fills Drum app has been developed in which 60 brand new tough drum fills (others than in the book) are demonstrated on video.. With the "Tools" button on your screen you will get access to the Fill Generator.. It's highly recommended to use the Drum APP besides the book, for an even more inspiring drum experience, but both the Book and Drum App are very useful on its own as well.. * Linear drum fills incorporate stickings that usually don't overlap each other. This is why linear drum fills and grooves always sound very open and clear!

Ornamentation and Improvisation in Mozart

Ornamentation and Improvisation in Mozart

Author: Frederick Neumann

Publisher: Princeton University Press

This book is a sequel to Frederick Neumann's Ornamentation in Baroque and Post-Baroque Music, With Special Emphasis on J.S. Bach (Princeton, 1978). In the present volume, the first work on this subject for Mozart's music, the author continues his important contributions to the search for historically correct performance practices, and to the liberation of the performer from improperly conceived and overly restrictive interpretation of musical scores. The first part of this book attempts to free ornamentation in Mozart from rigorism that has resulted from confusing the pure abstraction of ornament tables with concrete musical situations. The second part deals with pitches that were not written in the score yet often intended to be added when Mozart left "white spots" in his notation. These additions range from single notes to lengthy cadenzas. The problem addressed is the question of where such additions are possible or necessary and how they might best be designed. Professor Neumann draws on an immense knowledge of the literature written during Mozart's time and on his own comprehension of the subtleties of Mozart's music and musical styles. Refusing to interpret the sources dogmatically, he frees performers of Mozart from the rigid princples too often imposed by modern scholars. Frederick Neumann is Professor of Music Emeritus at the University of Richmond. Originally published in 1986. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
