Excerpt from First Steps of Political Economy The desire of possession is one of our earliest desires. The child desires to have something for its own. This desire becomes in man the desire of property - of wealth. Items of wealth. - The items of wealth are very numerous. Land, houses, furniture, clothing, carriages, watches, money, fruit, cattle - these and a great many other things constitute the wealth or riches of a country. Two things common. - Two things are common to all these articles: 1. They are adapted to gratify some desire; 2. They can be appropriated - that is, can be owned by some person or persons. All articles adapted to gratify desire and capable of appropriation come under the head of wealth. Air and sunlight. - Some objects of desire do not come under the head of wealth. Air is very desirable. All want it, and cannot live without it; but it is not an item of wealth. It cannot be appropriated - cannot become private property. This is owing to its abundance. Water. - The remarks which apply to air and sunlight apply, for the most part, to water. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Political Economy of the World Bank

The Political Economy of the World Bank

Author: Michele Alacevich

From the Publisher: The Political Economy of the World Bank: The Early Years is a fascinating study of economic history. This text describes perhaps what is the most crucial time for development economics: the birth of the "third world," the creation of development economics as a discipline, and the establishment of the World Bank's leading role in development. Using previously unavailable archival material, Michele Alacevich takes a close look at the years during which the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development-now known as the World Bank- turned its attention from reconstruction to development, having been upstaged by the Marshall Plan. He describes the "Currie Mission" to Colombia (1949-1954), the World Bank's first general survey mission in a developing nation. With the Currie Mission as a starting point and a case study, Alacevich analyzes the complexities of the Bank's first steps toward economic and social development in poorer nations, and helps the reader understand some foundational questions about development that are still of great relevance today. The Political Economy of the World Bank: The Early Years is essential reading for anyone interested in the economic history of international development as a lens for better understanding current development issues.

Excerpt from Common Sense, or First Steps in Political Economy, for the Use of Families and Normal Classes, and of Pupils in District, Elementary and Grammar Schools: Being a Popular Introduction to the Most Important Truths Regarding Labor and Capital This work is published, chiefly, in the hope of its having some influence towards the introduction of the teaching of moral and economical science in our schools. It is also intended to help all persons, including children, even without the aid of a teacher, to acquire some knowledge of the most important truths of those sciences. It will, it is hoped, be impossible for any person, after reading this little work, to question the practicability of imparting a competent knowledge of morals and of political economy even to young children. The circumstances which gave occasion to the work furnish additional evidence of this fact. In the winter of 1867-8 the author, as a volunteer teacher, gave a series of lessons in the Saturday Normal School of New York to a class of post-graduate teachers "on the object and method of imparting to young children a knowledge of the conditions of human well-being, commonly called 'political economy'." The class numbered about thirty at its commencement, and about thirty-five at its close, and, although the teachers could gain no advancement whatever from their attendance, their punctuality was remarkable, and equalled, if it did not exceed, that of any other class in the institution, although attendance at such other classes on the part of the under-graduate teachers was indispensable to their advancement. The teachers who attended the author's lessons became enthusiastic for the introduction of the teaching of the science into our schools, while the effect upon their own minds, in the additional power it gave them in their teaching was such, that nearly every member of that class has become noted as a specially skilled and earnest teacher.
