The European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE) series presents the latest innovations and achievements of leading professionals from the industrial and academic communities. The ESCAPE series serves as a forum for engineers, scientists, researchers, managers and students to present and discuss progress being made in the area of computer aided process engineering (CAPE). European industries large and small are bringing innovations into our lives, whether in the form of new technologies to address environmental problems, new products to make our homes more comfortable and energy efficient or new therapies to improve the health and well being of European citizens. Moreover, the European Industry needs to undertake research and technological initiatives in response to humanity's "Grand Challenges," described in the declaration of Lund, namely, Global Warming, Tightening Supplies of Energy, Water and Food, Ageing Societies, Public Health, Pandemics and Security. Thus, the Technical Theme of ESCAPE 21 will be "Process Systems Approaches for Addressing Grand Challenges in Energy, Environment, Health, Bioprocessing & Nanotechnologies."

Product transfer is a problem commonly encountered in industry when a production has to be transferred from a source plant to a target plant. In this paper a strategy to assist product transfer is proposed. The strategy is based on latent variable models (LVMs) to relate the data available from one or more source plants with the (usually scarce) data available from the target plant, and on LVM inversion to estimate the target plant operating conditions. The inversion is performed within an optimization framework, which can handle constraints for both product quality variables and input variables. An experimental nanoparticle production process is used as a test bed to illustrate the benefits of the proposed strategy.

This paper discusses data-based operating windows as a tool for process management and development. In particular identification of the operating window and its uncertainty are analyzed. The operating window is determined by maximizing either the mutual information (static) or entropy transfer (dynamic). An industrial example shows that the entropy of the indicator variable is reduced to half by an operating window specified with only few variables, selected amongst over 3000 candidates. Test model based simulations suggest that such few-variable operating windows can be reliably identified from datasets having lengths of a few thousand observations.

This study seeks to pave the way of designing and implementing a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) for controllability analysis of a chemical process design. Chemical processes are nonlinear continuous/discrete dynamic systems that are subject to considerable uncertainties and variations during their design and operation. These systems are designed to operate at an economically optimal steady-state. However, changing the value of the process parameters may cause deviations and elicit dynamic responses from processes. Generally, the ability of holding a process within a specified operating regime is called controllability. In this study a Petri net based DSL is designed specifically for controllability evaluation of process designs with an application to a flowsheet case study.

Uncontrolled changes caused many accidents or disasters. Management of change (MOC) has been a very important issue in process safety management. In this paper, it is considered that MOC is divided to two parts: one is individual change management and the other is management of them. Individual change management is an instance of engineering over the plant lifecycle (Plant-LCE), however a business flow of MOC has been hardly discussed. A business flow of MOC is expected to be based on a business process model (BPM) of Plant-LCE. The logical process safety management based on a BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. However the BPM is dispersed and too detailed for precisely. Therefore, an overview for the BPM of Plant-LCE has been proposed. Using an individual change management example, this paper shows that a business flow of the MOC can be described in the overview of the BPM of Plant-LCE.
