35 beautiful knitting designs, ranging from a simple wrap in chunky yarn for beginners to a lightweight lace evening shawl for experienced knitters. There's simply nothing more versatile than knitted shawls. They can be lacy or chunky, bright or neutral, cabled or just plain garter stitch, but they are always stylish, useful, and perfect for when you need a little extra warmth. Laura Strutt has designed 35 beautiful shawls and wraps, with something for everyone, from novice knitters to experts. Divided into Bright and Beautiful, Warm and Rich, and Neutral and Natural shades, the patterns use a complete rainbow of colours, including variegated yarns. The stitch patterns are just as diverse, with textured triangles, beaded lace stitches, and overlapping 'waves'. Start with a beautifully warm garter stitch wrap in a cool glacier blue – quick to knit even for a beginner – or a rainbow-striped triangular shawl. Then try a fashionable ombré-shaded shawl with an eyelet pattern, or a grey and white monochrome shawl with a bright contrast edging. For more experienced knitters, there are larger projects such as the brioche-stitch shawl, or the feather and fan stitch wrap in a variegated silk-based yarn. Whether you are knitting a cover-up for yourself, or a gift for a friend or family member, you will be spoilt for choice with these beautiful designs.

Save yourself some purl rows and knit your wraps in the round! When working most traditional shawl patterns in rows, you work a “pattern” row, and then turn and purl the wrong side. But by knitting your shawls and scarves in the round, you are always knitting on the right side, so it is easy to work beautiful stranded, lace, texture, and even brioche patterns. Plus, it's so fast to keep knitting with no turning! Once you’ve finished knitting your shawl, you then cut through the extra stitches included in each pattern (known as steek stitches). Hem with simple hand or machine sewing, and your wrap is ready to wear! Author Andrea Brauneis explains the process in detail, and the extra stitches and instructions are included in each pattern, making it easy to work these 21 gorgeous scarf and wrap patterns even if it’s your first time trying this technique. And once you try it, you’ll want to knit all your wraps around and around!

This vintage guide is based on Knitting For All, written by Margaret Murray and Jane Koster, published in 1941 - the same year in which clothes rationing was introduced. It was just one in a popular series of books written by Murray and Koster throughout the 1940s that provided not only a complete instructional guide to knitting, but also contained an assortment of patterns for the whole family. Apart from the knitting of new garments the book also focused upon the re-making and repairing of existing items, clearly reflecting the contemporary 'Make Do and Mend' ethos. Following a quick introduction to the styles and spirit of the era, selections of their own charming knitting patterns - which typify this wartime austerity - are reproduced in their entirety in the latter part of this book. These clothes and accessories are still wearable some seventy years after they were first designed and can be easily knitted by the modern knitter (with the conversions provided). For the less experienced, and as rudimentary knitting skills have hardly changed since Knitting for All was first published, excerpts from the original 'Principles of Knitting' chapter that provide a basic 'How To Knit' guide are also included. Patterns for the whole family include pullovers, cardigans, socks, scarves and gloves.
