One of NATO’s objectives is a better understanding of the human and social aspects of security-related issues. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), Leadership Development Programme on Gender and Diversity, Peace, Risk and Emergency Preparedness and Collaboration, held in Tønsberg, Norway, on 11-12 December 2018, one of the aims of which was to strengthen organizational leadership. The workshop firmly established the collaboration between Japan and other NATO countries with regard to Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The workshop gave the participating leaders and researchers an opportunity to meet and debate, to learn and to build networks of leaders for change. This book consists of fourteen chapters, including a summarizing introductory chapter. It explores topics related to the way in which continued progress and change in institutional behaviors require an approach focused on altering perspectives, and enhancing the skill sets of leaders. Each chapter stands alone, but is ordered within the framework of the Societal Programme Model (SPM) described in Chapter 1. The book will be of interest to all those involved in building leadership and changing institutional behavior.

This work was originally written as a PhD thesis at University of Southampton. It is inspired by The Butterfly Effect Theories to investigate lingua franca phenomena as complex adaptive systems within other complex adaptive systems. It focuses on English as a lingua franca and highlights Arabic as a lingua franca as well. This study’s large-scale surveys and interviews are aimed to explore users’ (in)tolerance towards misalignment with standard and native language usages and how their positions relate to their reported language practices, beliefs, attitudes, motives, identity management, ideologies, religions, context, and time. As a butterfly fapping its wings may cause a hurricane, this work shows how any small change in any small part, especially in contextual and temporal dimensions, has the power to set off a string of escalating changes in lingua franca and transcultural interactions.

This edited volume, based on papers presented at the World Congress of Comparative Education (Istanbul, 2010), presents research examining pre-service teacher education, in-service teacher development, and the politics of teachers’ work in a variety of geographical regions, including Asia, Africa, Eurasia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. More specifically, the chapters examine the situations, activities, and education of teachers in the societal contexts of Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, France, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Ireland, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, and the United States. The authors address a variety of important questions related to a group of employees who are key actors in determining the quality of education: How can pre-service teacher education best be organized for different purposes in various settings? What kinds of activities should be organized and who should be involved in in-service professional development to promote teacher capacity and commitment to perform their roles in classrooms and communities? What kinds of incentives can motivate teachers’ engagement with various aspects of their work? How do certain educational policies and reforms promote the professionalization or the deprofessionalization and proletarianization of teaching? What are the opportunities and constraints for teachers as they seek to operate within themicro-politics of schools and the macro-politics of society? The book thus contributes to refining our understanding of the critical theoretical issues in the field of comparative and international education as well as calling attention to dynamics that should be considered in developing and implementing as well as critiquing and resisting educational policies in varying contexts.
