It began life as Peter Bennett's journal, a straight-forward account of his experiences as a patient on the ward of a typical NHS hospital in the course of several extended visits starting in 2018. It gradually morphed into something rather different. It became an ever more complex and interesting book; emerging as a vivid, unflinching, by turns painful, angry, moving and hilarious memoir of this time. This is a story filled with touching and comical memories and incidents. It gives unblinking insights into the reality of the NHS today, showing how it functions and sometimes fails to function. It is partly a state-of-the-nation piece but is also far more than this. It is something richer and more substantive, offering the reader a fragmentary autobiography, a colourful recollection of Peter’s life as a successful lawyer and failed comedian. And ultimately it is a guide of sorts for those coming of age today, and a source of wit and wisdom for anyone shrewd enough to seek out, or fortunate enough to stumble upon, this richly entertaining book. It is a deeply personal, accessible, moving and wise piece of work.

VIEW FROM THE BED: VIEW FROM THE BEDSIDE A Wising Up Anthology Editors: Heather Tosteson, Ph.D., Phyllis A. Langton, R.N., Ph.D., Charles D. Brockett, Ph.D. Who is the doctor or nurse who for better, or worse, you can't forget? The patient who changed your life? Thirty-eight contemporary writers explore with memoir, story, and poetry the different ways we talk about, to-and through-each other at the doctor's office, hospital, or sickbed. One surgeon celebrates his first surgical success; another grieves the death of a patient. A nurse finds her compassion exhausted by a suicidal patient; another keeps an unsentimental inventory of those moments that make it all worthwhile. Patients transitioning from a state mental hospital collaborate with clinicians to write an essay about their experiences. A mother poignantly reviews her son's twenty-five years with congenital heart disease. A woman with Crohn's disease ponders the nature of her twenty-year relationship with her physician; another masters the Zen of medical appointments in a fractured system. Nurses find themselves patients; patients grow into therapists. This book should appeal to anyone familiar with the view from the bed or the view from the bedside-and with our need individually and as a society for a comprehensive view that compassionately holds them both. CONTRIBUTORS: Patricia Barone, Rachel Squires Bloom, Ann J. Brady, Nancy J. Brandwein, Mary Ann DiMola, Nina Gaby, Jane Herschlag, Paul Hostovsky, Kathleen M. Kelley, Patricia Kett, Robert J. Kus, Mariette Landry, Phyllis A. Langton, Sara Lippmann, Zoe Losada, Gerri Luce, Frederika R. Maister, John Manesis, Michele Markarian, Carolyn McAuliffe, Elaine Morgan, Molly O'Dell, David W. Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. "Powerful." --USA Today "Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault." --Washington Post "Superb, smart, and succinct." --Forbes

As a general rule I try to maintain a balanced and realistic approach to life. I'm convinced that the best place for a rabbit's foot is at the end of a rabbit's leg. And if there are fairies at the bottom of the garden, they go about their business and I go about mine. But although this approach keeps life on an even keel and prevents the stress of both over-excitement and grave disappointment, I do find that the perfectly mundane existence that I strive for and attain can occasionally seem a little flat, a bit lacking in absurdity. So from time to time, when a rattling cliche, or a good thumping banality presents itself, I'm inclined to give it a run for its money. Hand me a candle and I'll burn it at both ends, give me a cart and I'll put it before the horse.' In her inimitable style, coupled with her sharp wit and idiosyncratic views, Diski reviews her own experiences, an array of key historical figures and pertinent topics. Ranging from 'The Sexual Life of Catherine M.' and her ponderings on the thrill of guilt, to the biblical role of water in 'Did Jesus walk on water because he couldn't swim?' this is vintage Diski.

Millions of adults sleep with another adult, but what does it mean to share a bed with someone else, and how does it affect a couple's relationship? What happens when one partner snores? Steals the sheets? Prefers to sleep in the nude? To address these and other questions, Paul C. Rosenblatt asked couples to describe the struggles, challenges, and achievements of their bed-sharing experiences. Two in a Bed includes interviews with more than forty bed-sharing couples as they candidly discuss winding down and waking up, cold feet and tucked sheets, who sleeps near the door and who gets pushed to the edge, snoring, spooning, sleep talking, sleep walking, and the myriad other behaviors we negotiate in falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up each morning beside a partner. In addition to exploring the routines and realities of sharing a bed with another person, these interviews reveal important information about sleep, relationships, and American society. Stressing the intricacy and importance of a previously unremarked activity, Rosenblatt's Two in a Bed shows that sleep should no longer be viewed solely as an individual phenomenon.

Month by month, discover what you need to do and how to do it. Try it in your yard, a small garden, or even on a roof terrace. Everything is explained in clear, photographed steps: building your bed, growing from seed, planting, feeding, and harvesting. Huw shows how to guarantee early success by starting off young plants on a windowsill. He suggests what to grow in each part of the bed and provides alternative vegetables to swap in or out depending on what you like eating. No-dig gardening methods remove most of the back-breaking work, too. Veg in One Bed goes beyond the inspiring demonstrations on his YouTube channel Huw's Nursery.
