Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-House Tokens: Current in the Seventeenth Century The commercial relations of Britain have doubtless existed for more than twenty centuries. The Greeks made trading voyages hither long before the birth of Christ; and the Britae, or Britons, struck coins of gold, silver, and tin, based in their designs on an imitation of the coins of the Philippi of Macedon; the types of Alexander the Third, surnamed the Great, who died at Babylon three hundred and thirty-three years before Christ, were more particularly those which the Britae were ambitious to embody in their representations. Although Julius Caesar, in his second descent on this island, fifty-four years before Christ, does not particularize London, yet Tacitus describes it as being, in the age of Nero, a considerable, opulent, and commercial town; and Ammianus Marcellinus, a veracious historian, who bore arms under Constantius, Julian, and Valens, describes London as a vetustum oppidum. Julius Caesar made no conquest of Britain, but reembarked his forces September 26th, A. U. C. 699, and returned to the continent. The Britons, owing to the internal commotions among the Romans, continued unmolested for ninety years, when, in the year 36, Caius Caligula determined on the subjugation of Britain, and assembled a large army for that purpose; but these preparations resulted in the gathering of some cockle shells by the soldiers on the coast of Gaul, and returning to Rome.
