Excerpt from A History of Meade County, Kansas In Presenting this History of Meade County to the public I am timidly conscious that it will meet the full approval of none. In the preparation of this work I have talked with five hundred people, and received five hundred suggestions as to what the book should contain. Being anxious to please, but realizing my inability to carry out the ideas of the many well-meaning people and confine the work to one volume, I have discarded much that is interesting, but it has been my intention to include all that is important or valuable. The personal experience of every old settler would be interesting reading; the achievements of those who settled upon the frontier in the days "that tried men's souls," who battled with the elements, subdued the wilderness and made the desert fruitful, is a story worthy of the mightiest pen; the exploits of "Hoodoo" Brown, the activities of George DeCow, the eccentricities of Pat Mulligan, the unconscious humor of PeteHotz, the martial dignity of Captain Osgood, and the characteristics, freaks and foibles of many others who might be mentioned, would, if properly preserved, afford a source of never-ending amusement and entertainment; but it would not be history. Excerpt from A History of Republic County, Kansas A single county in the great state of Kansas occupies but an insignificant place on the map of the world, and its people and its story are comparatively unknown. Yet the grand river of national history is formed by the union of many rills of traditions and record, flowing from a thousand counties and states all over the land. The tracing of one of these rills to its source is the province of the present little volume. It is the aim of this work to collect and preserve some of the facts of the early settlement, subsequent growth and development of one of the leading counties of a young, yet great and glorious state. The families who were early on the ground, and whose members have contributed to make the county what it is, are worthy of remembrance; and their difficulties and sorrows, labors and patriotism, should not be allowed to fall into oblivion. By a knowledge of these, the present generation will be instructed, and the future will be guided. All history, if properly written, is profitable; and there is not a country, or a city, or a hamlet, on the globe, whose history might not be more or less valuable to posterity. We trust this little volume will be the means of preserving from the empire of decay Si host of incidents, of recollections and of anecdotes relating to the land of pioneers and first settlers of the county, which, in the estimation of the historian and student of history, are of priceless value, but which otherwise would soon fade from the memories of the living. Still, a perfect and complete history of any county is one of the impossibilities, and this work may be incomplete in many particulars. Nor, indeed, is it possible for it to be otherwise, as it is not permitted any man to attain perfection. Its regions lie beyond our reach. Excerpt from History of Labette County, Kansas, From the First Settlement to the Close of 1892 On May 15, 1391, the following report was made to the Labette County Historical Society, by a committee that had theretofore been appointed: "To the Labette County Historical Society: We, your committee appointed to consider and report upon the advisability of preparing anil publishing a history of our county, having had the same under consideration, report and recommend as follows: "1st. That to secure such preparation, one person should be selected and appointed as historian, and everyone should be requested to contribute such facts and information as are within ids or her knowledge which will help to make the history accurate and complete. "3d. We recommend that Hon. Nelson Case be appointed county historian, and invited to undertake the work of writing a history of this county at as early a day as practicable, to be submitted to the county society for its approval. "4th. For the successful carrying out of the proposed undertaking, everyone is invited to give such assistance as is within his or her power. "All of which is respectfully submitted. This report was unanimously adopted by the Society. In compliance with the request therein contained, I soon entered upon the task of gathering information, with the hope of having the work completed within a year. During most of the following winter, in which I had expected to do the main part of the work, family afflictions prevented my accomplishing anything to speak of.
