Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 Armed with the panoply thus furnished them, the Wesleyan missionaries who first visited our shores were prepared to promulgate and defend the doctrines and to enforce the discipline of their founder. As before said, however, they mainly insisted on experimental and practical godliness, urging upon all, high and low, rich and poor, the necessity of a change of heart, such a change as should be productive of a reformation of life and conduct, in order to insure everlasting salvation. Instead of exhausting their strength in controversial preaching on those debatable points about which they dif fered from Calvinists, Unitarians, Arians, and Universal iste, they generally contented themselves with a plain and unvarnished statement of their doctrinal views, with urging upon the people experimental and practical reli gion, and with defending themselves when assailed by others. This defence, however, often became necessa ry, more especially in the northern and eastern states, where the people were more accustomed to a critical ex amination of doctrinal points, and questions of doubtful disputation. Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 3 Thomas L. Rushmore, Esq. My Dear Sir: I submit to you the third installment of my narrative of the History of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of your family appears honorably in its pages, connected with one of its most interesting episodes, the introduction of Methodism into Canada. Many of its subjects have been meditated under the summer shelter of your trees, and its labor has been relieved by neighborly attentions which will ever associate the memory of your family with my task. In the two preceding volumes I have recorded the planting of the Church, and sufficiently denned its theological and ecclesiastical systems; in the present the story proceeds directly along its chronological line, suspended somewhat abruptly for the convenient size of the volume, but continued, with no further interruption, in the next, which is now passing through the press. Some important questions and topics, requiring more classified treatment, I have reserved for distinct chapters in the fourth volume, though they receive passing notice at their proper dates in the narrative. Many difficulties, some insuperable ones, have beset my labors. While we have abundant and well-verified documents for particular sections of the Church, for others, not less important, we have hardly any. Of some early preachers we have more or less ample biographies; of others, and of not a few who were chieftains of the cause, we have but scattered notices, incapable of being wrought into satisfactory sketches. I have done the best I could, perhaps all that any pen can now or ever do, to present these cases in their proper historical positions. Excerpt from Twin City Methodism: A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.; With Illustrated Biographical Department Containing Pen Pictures of Preachers and People Twin City Methodism is the first work of the kind that has as yet been published in the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It does not claim the cyclopedia style, for it is limited to the interests of local Methodism, and has not dealt with these facts in an elaborate manner. It is a plain, simple presentation to the friends of the church and to the general reader, of the chief events of Twin City Methodism, as gleaned from history and biography. Excerpt from A History of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 7 The Protestant Episcopal Church is the lineal and legitimate descendant of the Church of England. It represents in the United States of America Christianity as it is received and embodied in the Established Church of Great Britain. In doctrine, discipline, and worship it aims not to depart from its august parent further than local circumstances compel, but it claims to be supreme judge of the force of circumstances, and a supreme law in adapting itself to them. It derived its orders, it accepted its liturgy, it inherited its creeds and articles of religion, from the English Church. Yet, notwithstanding its foreign origin, it is not a foreign church. Its history is coeval with the earliest settlements of the continent, and has kept constant pace with all the varying phases of national development. In common with all the institutions in the land which claim for their permanent features a date anterior to the discovery of America, and in the same sense, this church came from abroad. Its structural features did not originate in the eighteenth century, when the nation arose, nor in the fifteenth century, when the continent was discovered. They antedated these events nearly two thousand years. But while thus transplanted, the church took early and firm root in American soil. It developed a constitution and a life essentially American and essentially its own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
