Excerpt from The Church Teacher's Manual of Christian Instruction: Being the Church Catechism Expanded and Explained in Question and Answer; For the Use of Clergymen, Parents, and Teachers The twofold series of questions and answers on the Church Catechism, contained in the following pages, is the substance of many years' catechizing and teaching in Church, Confirmation Classes, and Schools. It is designed as a help to the Clergy in catechizing in Church, and in the instruction of candidates for Confirmation, as well as a manual for teachers in Church Schools of all grades. It is published in the catechetical form, because the author believes that the majority of teachers require assistance in putting questions, just as much as the pupils require instruction in answering them. The two sets of questions are intended to be used simultaneously as well as separately; the first set, containing the longer and more difficult questions, is intended for the more advanced scholars; and the second, or shorter, is not only a subordinate exercise on the higher questions for the same class of pupils, but also a distinct and independent form of instruction for the less advanced. The longer Catechism, the author believes, will be found to go as deeply into the Theology of the Catechism as is needful for those who require to be instructed in such a formulary; whilst the second is, he trusts, as simple as possible without being childish. Excerpt from A Manual of Instruction for Confirmation Classes The Manual, accordingly, consists of a Course of class-lectures, and of a Catechism. The lst portion is for the Sunday; the 2ud for the week-day evenings between. An Office of Devotion, taken in the main from that invaluable Manual the Priest's Prayer Book, is prefixed. For the Catechism I am indebted to my Reverend and beloved brother the Warden of Racine College. Having used it with my candidates for two years, I asked his permission to insert it in this hand-book: with his customary kindness he at once granted my request. No further explanations are required. The Class Lectures are mere outlines, which the teacher may fill up at his discretion; as for the questions and answers in the Catechism, he will of course be governed by the capacity of his pupils.
