Excerpt from A Market Bundle This is all I propose to say about my Art. I feel I have done well in mentioning the subject, however, because, although I am a novice in litera ture, I have read much, and I know that the principal duty of a story-teller is to tell the reader about himself. I may add, I ought to add, one other fact to the biographical notes already Offered: I forgot to state that my humorous hypocrite is now a creature of the past. Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Excerpt from The Market Reporter, Vol. 1: April 17, 1920 Yearling Steers Show Only Advance Railroad Strike Reduces Supplies. The movement of live stock for the week ending April 10 was below normal and Chicago suffered more than the three other leading western markets. Because of the switchmen's strike at Chicago some offerings intended for that market went elsewhere, but the spreading of the strike to the other markets later caused a curtailment of supplies there also. The week's total at 10 markets approximated cattle, 401, 300 hogs, and sheep against cattle, hogs, and sheep the preceding week and cattle, hogs, and sheep the corresponding week a year ago. Excerpt from The Old Market-Cart Our Gill; and when children say. This, their heart is in the expression. The Scotchman had been with Mr. Reed ever Since Ben and Sally were born, and their world would have been very strange and imperfect without him. Their father was away at business all day in the city, three miles distant, and Gill managed the land - on1y twelve acres - and made it bring forth enough for family use, and a surplus for the market. He was such a good stew ard that he took the same interest in the place as if it were his own and he would have cut off his right hand rather than have proved unworthy of the trust reposed in him. Excerpt from Market Book, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing a Historical Account of the Public Markets in the Cities of New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Brooklyn; With a Brief Description of Every Article of Human Food Sold Therein In my case, being found here, so much out of my line, I do not know under which, or how many, of the above heads to place myself; and I must therefore leave the reader to judge, and determine my position from his own estimate of my merit. For several years, the unemployed hours from my business, or rather profession, had hung heavily on my mind, and to fill them up satisfactorily, was a thought I had often indulged in. To be sure, at times, there were no leisure hours, not one of the twenty-four, but what were needed for rest; and again, one, two, three, and sometimes four, could be employed in doing something, either useful or wasteful; but what to do, was the question. I knew I had some knowledge, which business and observation had given me; but I also knew that I was very deficient in learning, or at least of knowing how to ex press myself, satisfactorily to myself. So I thought to improve, or at least to inform myself, even at this late day; but the reader may say, An old scholar is not an apt one-and so I found it. I had the disadvantage of not knowing which end to begin with, but went headforemost into what appeared to me to be the most agree able to my feelings. Eighteenth-century fiction holds an unusual place in the history of modern print culture. The novel gained prominence largely because of advances in publishing, but, as a popular genre, it also helped shape those very developments. Authors in the period manipulated the appearance of the page and print technology more deliberately than has been supposed, prompting new forms of reception among readers. Christopher Flint's book explores works by both obscure 'scribblers' and canonical figures, such as Swift, Haywood, Defoe, Richardson, Sterne and Austen, that interrogated the complex interactions between the book's material aspects and its producers and consumers. Flint links historical shifts in how authors addressed their profession to how books were manufactured and how readers consumed texts. He argues that writers exploited typographic media to augment other crucial developments in prose fiction, from formal realism and free indirect discourse to accounts of how 'the novel' defined itself as a genre.
