The travel writer Paul Theroux turns his unflinching eye on an American South too often overlooked. He finds there a paradoxical place, full of incomparable music, unparalleled cuisine, and yet also some of the nation's worst schools, housing, and unemployment rates. On road trips spanning four seasons, wending along rural highways, Theroux visits gun shows and small-town churches, laborers in Arkansas, and parts of Mississippi where they still call the farm up the road 'the plantation.' He talks to mayors and social workers, writers and reverends, the working poor and farming families ... the unsung heroes of the south, the people who, despite it all, never left, and also those who returned home to rebuild a place they could never live without

Many of the phrases we use everyday are so woven into our vocabulary that we never think to question their origin or meaning. How often we comfort the broken-hearted with the reassurance that there are ‘plenty more fish in the sea’, or ruin a surprise by ‘letting the cat out of the bag’. We don’t really mean our friend should consider dating a fish, nor do we keep cats in bags, but we use these phrases regardless. Did you know that telling someone to ‘get off their high horse’ comes from the 13th century? Or that ‘hair of the dog’ wasn’t originally a hangover cure, but a belief that applying a dog hair to a dog bite would cure the wound? In the times of Roman Baths, getting the ‘wrong end of the stick’ didn’t translate as a simple misunderstanding, it actually referred to a communal toilet where a stick was used to pass a cloth from person to person, unfortunately some would often receive the wrong end...

To say the least, they mentioned, With all your quotes, you should write a book. I thought to myself, That is a wonderful idea, and they just poured out of me. I compiled them one by one, hour by hour, day by day, year by year, into one book. As I love quotes and sayings and clichs on anything. I love little hardback books, softback pocket guides, and so on. Im drawn to quotes, and I know people are as they live by them: day by day! However, I then decided to break them down by category, by mood, by feeling, and by emotion, and they became chapters in the book: Inspirational, General, Spiritual, etc. For fun, I wanted to create some T-shirts, as I love baby tees. I love tissue cotton tees. I love characters and sayings on tees. I was going to make them with some simple sayings, but they took on lives of their own. The tees are pieces of artwork, such as the chapters in the books. I am drawn to them, and I know people are too, so that is why combining them, I feel, is such as neat way to express this unique concept. And that is how Quotes to Live By books (by Think Again!) and Quotes tees (by luminous) were born. Its a timeless era. Its a lifestyle. Its a way of life. They are quotes to live by, so think again. Remember the Quotes, and always be luminous. Yours truly, Marni Enterprises, LLC

Careful writers and speakers agree that clichés are generally to be avoided. However, nearly all of us continue to use them. Why do they persist in our language? In It's Been Said Before, lexicographer Orin Hargraves examines the peculiar idea and power of the cliché. He helps readers understand why certain phrases became clichés and why they should be avoided -- or why they still have life left in them. Indeed, clichés can be useful -- even powerful. And few people even agree on which expressions are clichés and which are not. Many regard any frequent idiom as a cliché, and a phrase regarded as a cliché in one context may be seen simply as an effective expression in another. Examples drawn from data about actual usage support Hargraves' identification of true clichés. They also illuminate his commentary on usage problems and helpful suggestions for eliminating clichés where they serve no useful purpose. Concise and lively, It's Been Said Before serves as a guide to the most overused phrases in the English language -- and to phrases that are used exactly as often as they should be.
