Excerpt from A Pocket Lexicon to the Greek New Testament The present work is the third and last volume of the tiny trilogy which I have been permitted to con tribute for the use of students of the New Testament.' In my Oxford days I was particularly struck by the fact that many theological works, which in their German form cost a small sum, were only to be obtained at a greatly increased price, when they appeared in an English dress. It seemed to me that there was at least as large a public for such productions in Britain and America as in Germany, and I could never see that the usual improvement in form justified the higher cost. The supineness of the clergy and others interested has been and is to me a subject of wonder, especially as few of them are men of means. I have long held the view that the most necessary knowledge in all departments should be available to the English reading public at a moderate price, and in this view I have been heartily encouraged by the Delegates of the Clarendon Press. Excerpt from A Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament The need of a new greek-english Lexicon of the New Testament will hardly be questioned. Thayer's monumental work, deservedly the standard for more than thirty years past, and, supplemented by later literature, still likely to remain a standard of reference for sometime to come, was rather too bulky to serve as a table companion to the New Testament for the average man. A smaller book, which would lend itself more readily to constant reference, has been a real and growing want for the student. Excerpt from A Greek and English Lexicon of the New Testament The preceding remarks present a summary view of the principles which have guided the Author in the preparation Of the present volume. The Greek Of the New Testament constitutes but a small portion of the Greek language as a whole; and a Lexicon Of it can only aim to give a just exhibition of one of the subordinate forms or phases of that rich and noble tongue. Of such a work, the following, it would seem, ought to be some Of the chief traits; and they have accordingly been made promi nent Objects of attention.
