Excerpt from A Silent Singer It had been a hot day, and the minister had brought us, my mother and myself, from the city to his country home, in a mysterious, antediluvian species of buggy. Of all the race of men it is the country minister alone who can discover this particular breed of buggy. They are always gifted with strange powers of endurance; never being purchased until they have seemingly reached the point of dissolution, they will thereafter, for years and years, shake and totter, and rattle and rock, carrying all the time not only people but almost every conceivable kind of merchandise, from a few pounds of groceries to a pumpkin or a very youthful calf, without coming one step nearer their final wreck. This special buggy could hold one person in comfort, two in discomfort and three in torture. I had been the party of the third part in that day's ride, and worn out and crumpled and dusty, we passed from darkness into a room full of lamp-light and faces. I was trying to support myself steadily upon a pair of legs so recently aroused from dumb sleep that they had barely reached the ticklish stage, and the ten thousand needle-prickling power was in full blast when the Rev. Hyler introduced me to his seven sons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Quaker Singer's Recollections Singers must acquire a full repertoire of classic songs, oratorios and operas. These things should be learned first, learned rapidly and learned well; they are the stock in trade of the singer, but it is scarcely realized owing to the regrettable but quite frequent debasement of taste of the present time. Singers should learn Italian, French and German for the great music of those schools, and they must learn English for the magnificent music of our own tongue - and for very shame's sake, - for not one singer out of ten today can be understood when singing English, except in musical comedy where, unfortunately, good singing is not a requisite, but where, owing to the lack of other operatic opportunities, the very best avail able talent could be chosen, and should be heard. Return to Twin Peaks offers new critical considerations and approaches to the Twin Peaks series, as well as reflections on its significance and legacy. With texts that analyze the ways in which readers and viewers endow texts with meaning in light of historically situated and culturally shared emphases and interpretive strategies, this volume showcases the ways in which new theoretical paradigms can reinvigorate and enrich understanding of what Twin Peaks was and what it has become since it went off the air in 1991.

Excerpt from Style in Singing This last tone was delivered with the full force and brilliance of her magnificent voice, and was prolonged until the thrill produced in the listener became almost painful in its intensity. Again I ask, why did this world-famous singer perform this passage always in the same way? Unrefiecting people may reply vaguely that it was because the artist sang with expression. But what constitutes expression in singing? No great artist - no matter what the vehicle or medium through which his art finds manifestation - does anything at random. The wind bloweth where it listeth only in appearance; in reality, it is governed by immutable law. Similarly, the outward form of an art is only apparently dictated by caprice and freedom from rule. The effective presentation of every art is based on well defined and accepted principles. And it is with the earnest desire to throw light on this most important phase of vocal art, that I present the principles of Style in Singmg.
