Janes early years were full of adventure and excitement. She immigrated to Australia from England, married, and had five children. Disaster struck when her husband was arrested. She spent years grappling with the consequences of his crimes and the devastating effect on her family. Jane floundered in a spiritual and emotional wilderness. The pain of betrayal, confusion, and guilt reinforced her lack of self-worth. Could she ever recover? How could she forgive? Who could understand her humiliation, shame, and utter despair? Told with candid honesty and courage, this is a story of redemption and restoration that Jane attributes solely to Gods grace and mercy.

I am what I am today , not because of, but in spite of, the past. For author Stephanie Harrington, that statement encapsulates a life story that she shares with you in A Silk Purse from a Sows Ear In this true story she narrates how Georgina Jackson, aged only three years old, was forced to become Georgina Frazer. And this was the first example that Georgina was never going to experience a normal childhood, or for that matter...A normal life! Left to her own devices, she traveled a tormented journey, desperately seeking approval from anyone and everyone, making mistake after mistake, and involving\ so many others including partners, children, friends, and more. A Silk Purse from a Sows Ear? tells about the sadness, pain, disappointment, guilt, and desperation she encountered throughout life always worrying how others perceived her and the feelings of insecurity and inferiority that followed her in whatever she attempted. She shares a story of a traumatic, yet fascinating and unusual life.

Publisher's description: A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear is an enthralling blend of real life experiences, mixed with a nearly surrealistic sense of fantasy; at times, a warm and tender reflection of emotional and intellectual expression-- at other times, an absurd uprising of grand jocundity. Mishka Zakharin offers his unique perspectives on a variety of subjects, from the bitterness of unrequited love, to the passions of untamed sexuality; from life and death and the nature of the universe, to the sometimes blatantly disgusting functions of the human condition. Providing substance that is both darkly philosophical and divinely loopy-- an odd juxtaposition of spiritual wisdom and somewhat psychotic musings-- A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear has a bit of something for just about everyone.

Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.

Memoir of a South Bronx Childhood The Silk Purse, a memoir set in the l950s tells of Raquels ingenuity, courage, and inner strength as she struggles to keep her dreams alive while living under the close supervision of at least a dozen pairs of vigilant loving eyes. Raquels early childhood was filled with strict rules, traditional expectations, and myriad household duties imposed by her Puerto Rican Cuban extended family. From age 3-18, she lived under the watchful gaze of her parents, maternal grandparents, a great aunt, her half-sister, their majestic collie Sabu, various tenants, and many of the residents of the South Bronx, New York, apartment building where they all lived. Some episodes are touching examples of growing up; others are painful and poignant passages in the life of this young girl and her family. The story themes are about friendship, loyalty, childhood pranks, her first job, first love, first separation and much more. In spite of the cramped quarters located in the midst of a neighborhood that is showing signs of devastation, decay, and danger the apartment and building were a sanctuary for Raquel and her family. Raquel Ortiz writes with such humor and vivid description, I felt I was eating a juicy mango too! The coming of age stories of this young Latina are written with simplicity, humility and such dulzura you cant help but journey with the author to bitter sweet places in your own heart. -Linda Soto-Harmon, First Book, (A national childrens literary organization) Buy Your Copy Now!!
