Maybe once or twice in our lives, God grants us the high honor of meeting someone special-someone who walks so closely with Christ that -for the moment-we are sure that we are walking and talking with our Savior. That is what happened when many years ago God allowed my path to cross that of Marion Woods. From that first encounter, like so many others, I knew that Marion was someone very special. His love of God, his passion and compassion for God's children were so clearly evident and contagious. From then on, I have treasured each moment God has given us together. I urge our mission team members to "lean in close" to drink in every word Marion has to share with us. Likewise, I spend every free moment sitting as close as I can-drinking in every bit of wisdom, every ounce of inspiration and every drop of laughter. Rising From the Ashes is more than a book of religious poetry. It is about one woman’s journey, after healing for many years from the effects of childhood abuse, to continued growth in healing her spirit. Much attention has been given in recent years to uncovering child abuse and seeking to punish the abusers. However, that is only the first small step for the victim who will then often spend years and thousands of dollars to finally bring to recognition the insidious unseen effects that abuse has caused psychologically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Jolainne was one of those victims. It is easy to see physical scars and bruises, but it is very difficult to see interior scars and bruises. People more knowledgeable and competent than the author have discussed the psychological and social wounds, and she has even described her own long circuitous journey in another volume. However, Rising From the Ashes attempts to show how deeply wounded the victim’s spirit is affected. It also attempts to give hope to anyone else who has been affected by childhood abuse, especially when they recognize the spirit is the core of their being and can only be healed on a spiritual level. Because the journey seems so long, ways to acknowledge growth and progress to keep from being discouraged are often necessary. Rising From the Ashes attempts to demonstrate this progress by using the theme of seasons. A season is cyclical and so is healing. One doesn’t merely heal by first going through acknowledgement of a wound, then anger, then grief, then acceptance and, finally one is free from the abuse. No, the victim goes through many stages, often many times with the same issue. It is the same with spiritual healing. Trust is wounded on so many levels, but healing is possible and it is a wonderful journey when one can finally look back on it and see how God has really been with you all the way, even in the dark days when you cannot see or believe anything. Rising From the Ashes is a compilation from many poems over the years to illustrate the slow steady progress of one woman’s spiritual life encapsulated in a year of seasons. In one’s own life, if you can get through the dark times, you can see the silver lining. So, too, if you can get past the early dark poems of the book, you will arrive at that wonder-filled place where poems are filled with a sense of freedom and joy. The hope is that you will be able to see your own spiritual journey somehow reflected in its verses.

Poetry is the love of my life. In it, I have learned to let my thoughts flow. It taught me to paint the pictures the world gave me. The poems you will read in this book are those I wrote during my bipolar moments, or should I say, my moments of both uncertainty and contentment. They narrate my path. They paint the beauty of the hills I have traveled, the swampy rivers I have swum in, and the scenic oceans I have sailed. I am where I am today because I believed words held my destiny. Words and I began courting the day I learned how to write. They seduced me, broke my heart, and yet had the power to mend it. For years, I have thought of whether unveiling my life this way would be an efficient way to portray to individuals out there that no matter the turmoil they may encounter, Christ will always be present. I am taking a leap of faith, trusting that through these autobiographical words of mine, God will enable me to penetrate the hearts of his beloved. The purpose of this book is to unveil the love of God through the magical imagery often portrayed through poetry. I think a lot, and I often like to travel through these thoughts. The dimensions I go through teach me, mold me, and thus open my eyes a tad wider. I wish to share my visions particularly with the youth of today. May these words enlighten you as they do me every time I lay eyes on them. May they fortify, transform, and push you to become stronger individuals.
