Book excerpt: The story of Clara Bowman, the daughter of a wealthy New York City family, who loses her best friend and the man she expects to marry in a train accident on May 12, 1872. She takes a different course from the one charted for her as she recovers.
Clara Bowman is like most society women recently turned 18 in New York in the early days of the Gilded Age. Until the man everyone expects her to marry dies in a train accident in Queens n May 1872. Her ordered life turns to shambles until she discovers an artist painting roses in a corner of London's Regent's Park and who ignites in Clara a passion to recover through sketches and portraits and landscapes, freed of the expectations of others and freed to be herself. It will take time, work, and disappointments and obstacles for Miss Clara Bowman. This is the story about her breaking free from her family's and society's expectations. It is not an easy journey, though she eventually obtains her family's support, and she encounters real and emotional pain again and again, but this story, set in the early days of the Gilded Age, is about a woman's fulfillment. This novel is related to, but is not a sequel to, Róisín Campbell, published in 2020. Many characters in that book appear here and some of their stories after the end of that book are revealed here. This is, however, a separate story. That of Clara Bowman.

Róisín Campbell was eighteen when she stepped from a boat in New York Harbor in the summer of 1870. She knew little of the world beyond what she saw in her small town in County Limerick and what she read in the novels she devoured when her chores were done. She knew no one in New York other than her cousin Jimmy Regan and Michael Henry, a dapper gay gentleman she met on board who would become her confidante and advisor.Róisín received training from the Sisters of Mercy andwas hired as a maid in the wealthy house of Charles and Abigail Geherty. Circumstances, including the unwarranted hatred of the oldest daughter, Mary, led to her dismissal from there and from a second fashionable house. Fate intervened, and Róisín found herself as a nurse at a clinic for the Irish poor, and a further bit of fate led her to meet a woman whose name she did not get and who vanished as suddenly as she appeared. Into her new world entered her youngest sister, Sophie, heavy with child, and she became Sophie’s guardian and protector. This is the story at the dawn of the Gilded Age of a young Irishwoman who comes to America with nothing but who finds love there. In the heart of a good woman, and in the soul of an innocent child.

The Music of the Future is not a book of predictions or speculations about how to save the music business or the bleeding edge of technologies. Rather, it's a history of failures, mapping 200 years of attempts by composers, performers and critics to imagine a future for music. Encompassing utopian dream cities, temporal dislocations and projects for the emancipation of all sounds, The Music of the Future is in the end a call to arms for everyone engaged in music: "to fail again, fail better."

Greenwich Village Vignettes is a collection of short stories, or vignettes, chronicling a boy’s coming of age during the time period after the Second World War, to the close of the tumultuous and life-changing decade of the 1960’s. The area was always known for its artists, bohemians and intellectuals. My world consisted of an Italian-American ghetto, with all the hopes, pitfalls and myriad characters such an environment produced. Pictures emerge that are happy, sad, funny, poignant and tragic. Pictures of life that are an homage to the Greenwich Village I knew and grew up in, and to those who passed through there with me. These recollections are based upon factual events. To a limited degree, sequences have been rearranged or juxtaposed to fit the story line. Ultimately, it is a memoir and not a document of history. Any failure to be exact is due to the many years that separate me from their occurrence. It is what I remember, and relying upon that, in itself, exposes its fallibility.
