Criticism, both favorable and unfavorable, has tended constantly to be extravagant and polemical, dealing in superlatives and no positives. The quality of his style is such as either greatly to attract or greatly to repel; it leaves none indifferent. For this reason, objective, non-partisan studies of his poetry as a whole, or of individual poems, are very few. Furthermore, there has been all too much impressionism in the criticism which he has received, and all too little attention to details.
