The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Excerpt from A View of West Florida: Embracing Its Geography, Topography, With an Appendix, Treating of Its Antiquities, Land Titles, and Canals, and Containing a Map, Exhibiting a Chart of the Coast The following pages are the result of the occasional employ ment of the writer, while engaged in other pursuits, during a residence of seven years in Florida. His attention was first attracted to the subject, by remarking the singular deficiency of the maps of West Florida, in his frequent excursions through the country. Having been appointed one of the commissioners for locating the new seat of government of Florida, the author, for his own satisfaction, made a minute survey of the coast, from St. Andrew's bay to the Suwannee, as well as of the interior of the country in which Tallahassee is situated. In consequence of the information thus acquired, he conceived the idea of pre paring a new map of that part of Florida which had come under his immediate notice; and of accompanying it with a memoir, or essay, containing such information in relation to the country, as would seem to be called for at the present moment. In appearing before the public as an author for the first time, he throws himself upon the candour of those who are in search of useful and accurate information, without being too fastidious as to the manner in which it is conveyed for they will find no attempt to amuse by highly wrought diction, or the ingenious inventions of the imagination his object has been to offer something useful to practical men. Although Florida is rapidly increasing in population, there are several causes which must tend to retard its progress in some parts, for several years to come these are, principally, the nu settled land claims, and the large grants possessed by individu als, which are withheld from sale for the purpose of speculation. Come aboard! Put on your hat and throw away your cares. Let's float down the most important river in Florida: the mighty St. Johns (though for this north-flowing river, down is up!). We'll start where the river starts, in the marshes west of Vero Beach, and end up 310 miles later at the Atlantic Ocean. This guide describes the history, major towns and cities along the way, wildlife, and personages associated with the river. You'll go by Sanford and Georgetown, Palatka and Orange Park. And at the mouth of the river, you'll encounter the metropolis of Jacksonville and the Naval Station in Mayport. You'll meet some of the most important people in our state's history: Jean Ribault, John and William Bartram, Zephaniah Kingsley, Harriet Beecher Stowe; as well as many important groups: Timucuan and Seminole Indians, runaway slaves, British and Spanish settlers, and missionaries. You will see manatees and jumping fish and lots of species of birds. Away from the big towns on quiet weekdays, you will experience a solitude and closeness to nature that may surprise you in this very populated state. This new edition has completely updated traveling information, including websites and phone numbers. Next in series > > See all of the books in this series
