This book provides a basic understanding of adaptive control and its applications in Flight control. It discusses the designing of an adaptive feedback control system and analyzes this for flight control of linear and nonlinear aircraft models using synthetic jet actuators. It also discusses control methodologies and the application of control techniques which will help practicing flight control and active flow control researchers. It also covers modelling and control designs which will also benefit researchers from the background of fluid mechanics and health management of actuation systems. The unique feature of this book is characterization of synthetic jet actuator nonlinearities over a wide range of angles of attack, an adaptive compensation scheme for such nonlinearities, and a systematic framework for feedback control of aircraft dynamics with synthetic jet actuators.

While new actuation technologies promise to revolutionize modern control systems applications, effective compensation of new actuators is crucial for realizing such revolutions. One type of such actuators are the synthetic jet actuators which are being currently studied for a next generation of aircraft control systems. In this dissertation, an adaptive feedback control system is designed and analyzed for flight control of linear and nonlinear aircraft models using synthetic jet actuators. The novel features of this work are a new characterization of synthetic jet actuator nonlinearities over a wide range of angles of attack, a new adaptive compensation scheme for such nonlinearities, and a new systematic framework for feedback control of aircraft dynamics with synthetic jet actuators. Characteristics of synthetic jet actuators are nonlinear, and they change significantly with angle of attack when being applied to aircraft motion control. To effectively compensate such nonlinearities, an adaptive inversion-based compensation scheme needs to be designed with an augmented inverse function. Such an adaptive inverse is developed using adaptive approximation to handle the uncertainties of the actuator nonlinearities. A nonlinear state feedback control law is combined with the adaptive inverse compensator for a benchmark aircraft system with synthetic jet actuation signals. Related design issues are addressed for such an innovative actuation technology for aircraft, with stability analysis and simulation results for system demonstration.

Shedding light on new opportunities in predictor feedback, this book significantly broadens the set of techniques available to a mathematician or engineer working on delay systems. It is a collection of tools and techniques that make predictor feedback ideas applicable to nonlinear systems, systems modeled by PDEs, systems with highly uncertain or completely unknown input/output delays, and systems whose actuator or sensor dynamics are modeled by more general hyperbolic or parabolic PDEs, rather than by pure delay. Replete with examples, Delay Compensation for Nonlinear, Adaptive, and PDE Systems is an excellent reference guide for graduate students, researchers, and professionals in mathematics, systems control, as well as chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, and civil/structural engineering. Parts of the book may be used in graduate courses on general distributed parameter systems, linear delay systems, PDEs, nonlinear control, state estimator and observers, adaptive control, robust control, or linear time-varying systems.

This book is concerned with the fault estimation problem for network systems. Firstly, to improve the existing adaptive fault estimation observer, a novel so-called intermediate estimator is proposed to identify the actuator or sensor faults in dynamic control systems with high accuracy and convergence speed. On this basis, by exploiting the properties of network systems such as multi-agent systems and large-scale interconnected systems, this book introduces the concept of distributed intermediate estimator; faults in different nodes can be estimated simultaneously; meanwhile, satisfactory consensus performances can be obtained via compensation based protocols. Finally, the characteristics of the new fault estimation methodology are verified and discussed by a series of experimental results on networked multi-axis motion control systems. This book can be used as a reference book for researcher and designer in the field of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control and can also be used as a reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities.
