This report examines heterogeneity in young adult outcomes among students at risk for school failure due to low socioeconomic status (SES). It addresses the question: "Among students at risk due to status characteristics, what are the relationships of high school engagement and attainments with post-high school outcomes?" Two sets of outcomes are considered: entry and persistence in postsecondary education, and employment and income as a young adult. The report distinguishes between "status risk factors" such as SES and race/ethnicity and two other sets of risk factors: behavioral risk factors and academic risk factors. Behavioral risk factors are behaviors and attitudes closely related to learning, for example, attendance, paying attention to the teacher, completing coursework, and developing a sense that schooling is important to future life successes. These behaviors and attitudes are referred to as school engagement. "Disengagement" (e.g., not attending class, not completing assignments) can create severe impediments to learning. This PDE is a analysis of the information available on the current state of adult education through critical and postmodern theory, which hypothesizes the "at-risk" condition of adult students in higher education. to accomplish this, the investigation includes an extensive review and critique of (1) the literature, (2) contemporary programs and practices, and (3) personal accounts from adult students of their academic experiences. the PDE takes shape in the form of a unified series of topical essays advancing the notion that adults are marginalized in academic institutions by a deeply-rooted culture bias. Among the essays supporting this claim are: defining "at-risk" in theory and reality, the political economy of adult education, a qualitative study presenting personal tales of struggle, postmodern possibilities for adult learning, and critical postmodern leadership. In these collected analyses, we find that adult students display a separate and unique culture (designated as Otherness) alienating them from traditional campus culture and jeopardizing their educational plans. Through both hidden and contradictory themes embedded in the fabric of academic organizations, properly extracted through the dialectical probing of critical and postmodern theories, adults do indeed appear to face numerous cultural biases that place them "at-risk" and preventing their full and autonomous participation in the learning experience.
