There is much discussion as to the reasons why capitalism does not thrive well in some non-European settings and there is a view that this is particularly so in Africa. In African Economic Humanism Mfuniselwa J. Bhengu focuses crucially on the cultural backdrop to economics in Southern Africa specifically, and Africa generally. The author describes his search for a suitable alternative economic paradigm, particularly one appropriate for the African Sub-Saharan region, that might serve to enhance economic development in a free and unhindered way. This Book is the outcome of a long project begun thirty years ago. It is a book on the makings of pan-Africanism through the predicaments of being black in a world dominated by being white. The book is a tribute and celebration of the efforts of the African-American and African-Caribbean Diaspora who took the initiative and the audacity to fight and liberate themselves from the shackles of slavery. It is also a celebration of those Africans who in their own way carried the torch of inspiration and resilience to save and reconstruct the Free Humanism of Africa. As a story of the rise from the shackles of slavery and poverty to the summit of Victors of their Renaissance Identity and Self-Determination as a People, the book is the story of African refusal to celebrate victimhood. The book also situates women as central actors in the Pan-African project, which is often presented as an exclusively masculine endeavour. It introduces a balanced gender approach and diagnosis of the Women actors of Pan-Africanism which was very much lacking. The problem of balkanisation of Africa on post-colonial affiliations and colonial linguistic lines has taken its toll on Africas building of its common identity and personality. The result is that Africans are more remote to each other in their pigeon-hole-nation-states which put more restrictions for African inter-mobility, coupled by education and cultural affiliations, the communication and transportation and trading networks which are still tied more to their colonial masters than among themselves. This book looks into the problem of the new wave of Pan-Africanism and what strategies that can be proposed for a more participatory Pan-Africanism inspired by the everyday realities of African masses at home and in the diaspora. Too many people everywhere are angry with their governments. Some would even tell you they are mad. People are frustrated because they feel their elites and governments failed to provide them the basic services that governments are supposed to provide: freedom, peace and security, trusted civil service, and above all an economy and a socio-economic environment that help citizens to work, provide food, education and health services for their families. Many feel the dreams they were pursuing became nightmares. That the political elites, oftentimes beholden to their self-interest while paying lip service to the common good and to money, are bankrupting our moral capital and international goodwill. Governments, systems, and bureaucracies are perceived as incompetent, corrupt, and rigged in favor of the 1% rich, thus keeping the 99% poor hostage. In essence, many people believed that what we now have is a system of modern day slavery where the rich exploit and enslave the poor. Whence the call for revolution to fundamentally change the greed-centered ideologies of tyranny, oppression, and exploitation on which the status quo is founded. Humanity is at a crossroads. We either climb to the mountaintop or slide down to the valleys of death. ere would be hope if we revisit and critically evaluate the official narrative of history imposed by "the victors". There would be hope if we start a genuine conversation about narratives. There would be hope if we start a culture of careful listening. There would be hope if we seek to attain a deeper human understanding of life and the real meaning of the pursuit of happiness. It is time to learn the lessons of old, engage in a rethinking of the human story of barbarism and civilization, and invest in serving the common good of all people. When people open their minds and hearts, they can attain a new awakening and a liberation capable of leading us to realize, at this eleventh hour, a New 21st Century Humanism whose time has come.
