This book focuses on the status quo and the latest information on the water-soil-agriculture nexus in the MENA countries. It presents several case studies and applications from e.g. Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan, while also sharing and discussing the latest findings. The content includes a range of agriculture-related topics that focus on: water resources management, impacts of climate change, and wastewater treatment for reuse in agriculture sectors; in addition, sustainable approaches to agricultural-based industry, organic crop production, crop water requirements, and soil environment are discussed in an updated and comprehensive review. In turn, the book discusses the applications of GIS and remote sensing as a new technology for better agriculture management, as well as its use in Egypt as a representative country. In closing, it considers the implementation of an environmental information system in data-scarce MENA countries from the standpoint of the water-food nexus, and addresses the question of climate justice in the MENA region. Exploring various dimensions of MENA country-based case studies on achieving sustainable agriculture, the book offers an invaluable source of topical information for agricultural sustainability-related stakeholders in the region, researchers and graduate students alike.

This book is focused on the challenges to implement sustainability in diverse contexts such as agribusiness, natural resource systems and new technologies. The experiences made by the researchers of the School of Agricultural, Forestry, Food and Environmental Science (SAFE) of the University of Basilicata offer a wide and multidisciplinary approach to the identification and testing of different solutions tailored to the economic, social and environmental characteristics of the region and the surrounding areas. Basilicata’s productive system is mainly based on activities related to the agricultural sector and exploitation of natural resources but it has seen, in recent years, an industrial development driven by the discovery of oil fields. SAFE research took up the challenge posed by market competition to create value through the sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable resources of the territory. Moreover, due to its unique geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean basin, Basilicata is an excellent “open sky” laboratory for testing sustainable solutions adaptable to other Mediterranean areas. This collection of multidisciplinary case studies and research experiences from SAFE researchers and their scientific partners is a stimulating contribution to the debate on the development of sustainable techniques, methods and applications for the Mediterranean regions.

The Middle East and North Africa region is well-known for its abundant natural resources and important geostrategic position. This position is often overshadowed by continued sectarian violence and trans-boundary conflicts that threaten the stability of the entire region with serious global implications. This preoccupation with conflict has come at the expense of addressing the region’s other challenges. Although the region’s fragile environmental state has increasingly preoccupied policymakers in individual countries, there is currently insufficient attention paid to coordinating collaborative action to recognise and address problems relating to its environmental sustainability and climatic change. In the absence of a positive agenda for tackling these issues, recurrent environmental setbacks and rapid depletion of the region’s natural resources continue to pose a major threat to the long-term economic, political, and social stability of the region. Despite the urgency of these challenges, there is little research dedicated to studying MENA’s environmental sustainability. Environmental Challenges in the MENA Region: The Long Road from Conflict to Cooperation draws from the proceedings of a seminal international conference on the subject at SOAS in October 2016, which was held as a celebration of the SOAS Centenary. This led to a collective contribution by experts and policy-makers concerned with the state of the MENA region’s environmental predicament with the aim of addressing these problems in a constructive and forward-looking approach. The chapters in this book are predicated upon two critical premises. First, expertise and awareness from a wide range of disciplines is required to understand and address environmental challenges. And, second, to have a real chance of success, MENA countries need to confront these problems as their common threats and to see them as an opportunity for regional cooperation and policy coordination. This book provides the results of an interdisciplinary effort to address the various dimensions of the region’s environmental challenges from across the region and disciplines.

Theoretical arguments associate labor migration and regional innovation capacity are based on technological innovation and knowledge diffusion that stimulate productivity increase in firms, institutions and regions. Labor mobility may contribute efficiently in the knowledge spillover and diffusion and because migrants can utilizes the knowledge and skill they gain from parental institutions which exploit in the host country. The migrated skill worker increase the knowledge accumulation and spillover which leads to increase the productivity of firm, institutions and region. Human capital migration is essential for knowledge diffusion because it enables the transfer of tacit information between businesses or institutions, enhancing productivity. In this context of externalities generation, skilled labor mobility is an important mechanism for the interregional transfer of technological knowledge diffusion.

This book focuses on the soil and environmental resources and how to utilize them under Egyptian conditions to achieve tolerance to environmental abiotic stresses, i.e., drought, heat, salt, pollutants, and biotic stresses such as disease resistance. Further, it explores ways to increase productivity, improve the quality of field crops, and reduce the food gap. The application of modern technologies is an essential mechanism for improving crops' productivity through laser, seed technology, mycorrhiza, and biotechnology to enhance the yield of genotypes in sustainable farming systems. Therefore, this book discusses fundamental ways to increase productivity under various environmental circumstances. The book reflects the enormous potential held by horizontal expansion in the newly reclaimed lands in Egypt. Tapping that potential depends on developing crops that are highly tolerant to environmental stresses and mitigating the impacts of climate changes around the world to help Egypt and countries with similar weather and water deficits achieve the 2030 sustainability agenda for agriculture. Given its profundity and scope, the book offers a valuable asset for stakeholders, policy planners, decision-makers, researchers, and scientists in Egypt and worldwide.
