This book takes inventory of and evaluates the available resources for the development of alternative tourism in Turkey. It examines the role of alternative tourism in future tourism development plans and proposes public policies necessary to assure sustainability. Although tourism started later in Turkey than in the Western Mediterranean countries it has grown very rapidly during the last three decades and today the country ranks among the top ten countries in the world in terms of both arrivals and receipts. However, most of the tourism development has been in the mass tourism sector or the so-called sun-sea-sand tourism. While crucial for the economic development of Turkey, mass tourism, in the absence of proper planning, has happened in a haphazard manner leading to numerous environmental and socio-cultural problems. This book argues that, in order to mitigate these problems, Turkey should encourage the development of alternative forms of tourism.

Lately, tourists consider their mobile devices as essential accessories for the realization of their trip before, during, and after the visit. Such devices allow them to consult information about points of interest, services, or products in real time. Thus, mobile devices have come to be considered as tools to support decision making regarding the realization of trips. In the digital environment, tourists seek complementary information to consolidate knowledge about the destination, heritage, culture, customs, and traditions that make the visited place unique. Simultaneously, they transform tourist experiences into a memory associated with travel, contribute to the sustainability of local populations, reduce inequalities, and cooperate to improve the quality of life of all involved. ICT as Innovator Between Tourism and Culture differs from others on the same areas because it aims to place the emphasis on and increase the bridge of knowledge between information communications technology (ICT), tourism, and culture, considering ICT as the main driver that creates the development environment and enhances the tourist experience in general. In particular, it is linked to cultural heritage, making it a more sustainable and intelligent tourist destination, taking into account the well-being of the local population and visitors. Covering topics such as destination image, religious tourism, and innovation dynamics, this book is an essential resource for IT consultants, hotel managers, marketers, travel agencies, tour operators, tourism researchers, professors, students, practitioners within the tourism industry, and academicians.

The subject of sustainability has become central to the discussion of how to succeed in the stable development of the tourism industry, due to the uncontrollable nature of supply and demand over the past few decades. Thus, this book examines policies and practices associated with the introduction of various methods in order to maintain sustainable tourism development. The list of policies and practices is based on a selection of the most recent topics, providing many real-world examples and cases in relation to culture and nature-based environmental issues, representing both individual businesses and tourist destinations with an international focus, namely Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Portugal, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and the USA. This book critically examines different forms of urban-rural links for sustainable development in different countries. As intertwined processes of globalization, digitalization, environmental challenges and the search for sustainable development continue, rural and urban areas around the world become increasingly interconnected and interdependent. This book contributes to understanding the role of this growing interconnectedness from an economic geographical perspective. It does so by theoretically and empirically addressing the various existing linkages, such as food networks, value chains, and regional governance at local, regional, national and international levels. In doing so, contributions extend and contrast existing approaches dealing with urban and rural areas separately by considering the interplay between these two as well as their consequences for sustainability transition pathways. This edited volume adds to the academic and policy debate by bringing together a variety of concepts and themes in order to shift the research and policy agenda away from simple dichotomy to different notions of rural-urban linkages. Offering multidisciplinary insights into rural-urban linkages, the book will be of interest to decision-makers, practitioners and researchers in the fields of economic geography, regional planning, food studies and economics.
