Excerpt from An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary The following work presents itself to the public with no claims to attention, but such as are founded upon the interest, which may be felt in the lives of Americans. Finding himself a few years ago in a literary retirement, with no important duties, which pressed immediately upon him, the author conceived the plan of this dictionary. He was desirous of bringing to the citizens of the United States more information, than was generally possessed, respecting the illustrious men of former times, the benefactors and ornaments of this country, who have passed away. He persuaded himself, that if he could collect the fragments of biography, which were buried in the mass of American history, or scattered amidst a multitude of tracts of various kinds, and could fashion these materials into a regular form, so as to place before the eye our great and good men, if not in their full dimensions, yet in their true shape, he should render an acceptable service to his countrymen. This work with no little labor he has now completed; and the inexperienced artist, in his first essay, can hope only, that his design will be commended. He wishes chiefly, that as the images of departed excellence are surveyed, the spirit, which animated them, may be caught by the beholder. As an apology however for the deficiences and errors of various kinds, which may be found in the work, a full exposition of his plan, and some representation of the difficulty of executing it seem to be necessary. Excerpt from A New American Biographical Dictionary; Or Remembrancer of the Departed Heroes, Sages and Statesmen of America But why should'we enumerate our injuries in detail? By one statute it is declared, that parliament can of right make laws to bind us in all cases whatsoever. What is to defend us against so enormous, so unlimited a power? Not a single man of those who assume it, is chosen by us'; or is subject to our control or influence; but, on the contrary, they are all of them exempt from the operation of such laws; and an American revenue, if not diverted from the ostensible purposes for which it is raised, would actually lighten their ov'vn burdens in proportion as they increase ours. We saw the misery to which such despotism would reduce us. We for ten years incessantly and inefl'ectually besieged the throne as supplicants; we reasoned, we remonstrated with par liament in the most mild and decent language. Excerpt from Dictionary of American Biography: Index; Volumes 1-20 Early in the publication of the twenty volumes of the Dictionary of American Biography it became evident that an analytical index must be compiled if the wealth of the Dictionary was to be made available for refer ence.* The task of compiling an index of this scope has been great, and the problems have been complicated, but the compilers have rendered patient and devoted service to the end that all subjects in the entire set might be classified and arranged so as to give the Dictionary its maximum usefulness. The index, in its broadest sense, is an epitome of our national life in all its varied aspects and the compilers have kept constantly in mind this body of factual evidence. Excerpt from Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 1: Abbe-Barrymore A tentative list of names was first compiled from earlier works of reference, but it was deficient in the particulars just noted. A classification was then devised on the basis of occupations, trades, and professions, as likely under American conditions to bring to, light significant figures in specialized fields Of human endeavor. For each of these groups some authority was asked to supply a tentative list. Every such list was submitted to other specialists, or to groups of specialists, who dropped some names, added others, and attempted to make a rating of all. To avoid the possibility of names slipping through the meshes of this drag-net, necrologies of all sorts were carefully searched; and the pro posed list of names in the first volume was printed and circulated three months before the volume was sent to the printers, in order to discover serious omissions.
