Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the his tory of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as may be necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. I have tried to make a good anthology for students who have learned to read the language of Goethe and Schiller with some facility, and would like to know something of the earlier periods, but have not studied, and may not care to study, Old and Middle German. On this account the selections in Part First are given in modern German translations. The original texts are omitted because space was very precious and the book was intended as an aid to literary rather than linguistic study. In making the selections my first principle was to give a good deal of the best rather than a little of everything. I wished to make friends for medieval German poetry, and it seemed to me that this could best be done by showing it in its strength and its beauty. So I have ignored much that might have had a historical or linguistic interest for the scholar, and have steadily applied the criterion of literary worth. Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Excerpt from A Primer of German Literature This little volume aims at nothing more ambitious than to give an outline of the growth of German literature; but while it may serve as an introduction to a more in timate acquaintance with the subject, the author hopes that readers who, without the leisure to pursue the study in larger works, may wish to know something of the men and women whose genius has illuminated the intellectual progress of Germany, may find this Primer sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy that desire. The author is gratified to learn from her publishers that a sixth edition of this Primer has been called for, and has sought, by a thorough revision, to make it worthy of continued approval for the object for which it was prepared. Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Masterpieces of German Literature, Translated Into English The choice of his nom de guerre is significant of Jere mias Gotthelf's literary activity. He regarded himself as the prophet wailing the misery of his people, who could be delivered only through the aid of the Almighty. It never occurred to him to strive for literary fame. He considered himself as a teacher and preacher purely and simply; in a measure, as the successor of Pestalozzi, who, in his Lienhard and Gertrud (1781 had created a sort of pedagogical classic for the humbler ranks of society; and if there be such a thing in Gotthelf's make-up as literary influence, it must have emanated from the sage of Burgdorf and Yverdun. To some extent also Johann Peter Hebel (176g1826), justly famed for his Alemannian dialect poems, may have served him as a model, for Hebel followed an avowedly educational purpose in the popular tales of his Schatzkc'istlein des rheinischen Hausfreunds Treas ure Box of the Rhenish Crony of which it has been said that they outweigh tons of novels.
