Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Rigid Dynamics This elementary treatise on Rigid Dynamics has arisen out of a course of lectures delivered by me, during the past few years, to advanced classes in the University. It is intended as a text-book for those who, having already mastered the elements of the Calculus and acquired some familiarity with the methods of Particle Dynamics, wish to become acquainted with the principles underlying the equations of motion of a solid body. Although indebted to the exhaustive works of Routh and Price for many suggestions and problems, I believe that the arrangement of the work, method of treatment, and more particularly the illustrations, are entirely new and original; and that they will not only aid beginners in appreciating fundamental truths, but will also point out to them the road along which they must travel in order to become intimate with those higher complex motions of a material system which have their culminating point in the region of Physical Astronomy. My thanks are due Mr. J. C. Glashan of Ottawa, who has kindly read the proofsheets and supplied me with a large collection of miscellaneous problems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Dynamics of a Particle and of Rigid Bodies In the following work I have tried to write an elementary class-book on those parts of Dynamics of a Particle and Rigid Dynamics which are usually read by Students attending a course of lectures in plied Mathematics for a Science or Engineering Degree, and by Junior Students for Mathematical Honours. Within the limits with which it professes to deal, I Hope it will be found to be fairly complete. I assume that the Student has previously read some such course as is included in my Elementary Dynamics. I also assume that he possesses a fair working knowledge of Differential and Integral Calculus; the Differential Equations, with which he will meet, are solved in the d104, and in an Appendix he will find a summary of the methods of solution of such equations. In Rigid Dynamics I have chiefly confined myself to two-dimensional motion, and I have omitted all reference to moving axes. I have included in the book a large number of Examples, mostly collected from University and College Examination Papers; I have verified every question, and hope that there will not be found a large number of serious errors. For any corrections, or suggestions for improvement, I shall be grateful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic book titles. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Dynamics: Containing Applications to Thermodynamics, With Numerous Examples Although in recent years several important works on Dynamics have been published in England, yet none have been issued which seem to fill the role contemplated in this book. In its composition we have started from the most ele mentary conceptions, so that any Student who is acquainted with the conditions of Equilibrium and with the notation of the Calculus can commence the Treatise without requiring the previous study of any other work on the subject. The first half contains a tolerably full treatment of what is usually styled the Dynamics of a Particle. The latter half treats of the Kinematics and Kinetics of Rigid Bodies; and throughout we have kept the practical nature of the subject in view, and have, in general, avoided purely fancy problems. Excerpt from The Elementary Part of a Treatise on the Dynamics of a System of Rigid Bodies, Vol. 1: Being Part I. Of a Treatise on the Whole Subject; With Numerous Examples The student who is just beginning dynamics may not wish to be delayed by a chapter of preliminary analysis before he enters on the real subject of the book. He may therefore begin with D'Alembert's Principle and read only those parts of chapter I. to which reference is made. Others may wish to pass on as soon as possible to the principles of Angular Momentum and Vis Viva. Though a different order may be found advisable for some readers, I have ventured to indicate a list of Articles to which those who are beginning dynamics should first turn their attention. As in the previous editions a chapter has been devoted to the discussion of Motion in Two Dimensions. This course has been adopted because it seemed expedient to separate the difficulties of dynamics from those of solid geometry. Throughout each chapter there will be found numerous examples, many being very easy, while others are intended for the more advanced student. In order to obtain as great a variety of problems as possible, a further collection has been added at the end of each chapter, taken from the Examination Papers which have been set in the University and in the Colleges. As these problems have been constructed by many different examiners, it is hoped that this selection will enable the student to acquire facility in solving all kinds of dynamical problems. There are many useful instruments and important experimental researches whose theories require only a knowledge of dynamics and which can be easily understood without any long or intricate description. It will be seen that many of these have been selected as useful examples. Historical sketches have been attempted whenever they could be briefly given. Such notices, if not carried too far, add greatly to the interest of the subject. It is chiefly with the memoirs written since the early part of the last century that we are here concerned, and the number of these is so great that anything more than a slight notice of them is impossible.
