Since the first papers by E. N. Leith and J. Upatnieks on the subject of holography appeared in 1961, there has been a virtual explosion of research activity in the field. More than SOO papers and articles on holo graphy have appeared in the last ten years. Many applications of holo graphy have been proposed, and some of these are beginning to enter the realm of usefulness. One of the applications that appears to hold great promise is acoustic imaging by means of holography. The first papers on this subject appeared in 1966. but already research activity in the field is burgeoning. Tbree symposia whoUy devoted to acoustical holography have been held and tbe papers published in book form. The purpose of this book is to bring together the results of research in acoustical holography, some of it as yet unpublished, under one cover so that workers in holography, nondestructive testing, medical imaging, underwater imaging, and seismic exploration can decide whether this new technique can be useful to them.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Acoustical Holograhy and Imaging, held in Palo Alto, California, on July 18-20, 1973. The title of this Symposium differed from that of the previous four by the addition of the word "Imaging," reflecting an increase in emphasis on nonholographic methods of acoustical visualization. For convenience, no change has been made in the title of this published series. The 42 Symposium papers cover a wide range of theoreti cal and applied topics, and effectively define the state-of the-art in this rapidly developing field. Many of them relate to applications of acoustic visualization in such diverse fields as nondestructive testing, medical diagnosis, microscopy, underwater viewing, and seismic mapping. Only a space limitation of 115 seats prevented this First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography from having an attendance of over 250. Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor considerably enhanced the informal sessions, which frequently became as spirited as one might expect in a new field. Dr. H. M. A. El-Sum, a consultant to the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories and a pioneer in the field of holography, set the stage with the first paper. He provided a general introduction to the physical principles and practical methods involved in optical and acoustical holography. His paper also included a summary of various specific techniques currently used in sound holography, with the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations involved for each approach.

The reader is cautioned only to use the sec tional titles as a rough guide. For instance, the reader interested in new methods should not just read section V since he will find a new liquid surface relief method de scribed in chapter lOin section III. In an effort to reduce the time delay between the meeting and the publication date, the publishers have pro duced this volume using the shoot-from-manuscript method instead of the mote time consuming typesetting method that was used on the previous volumes. As a result there may be differences in notation and definitions used for one chapter to another.
