Excerpt from An Introduction to Library Classification, Theoretical, Historical, and Practical, and a Short Course in Practical Classification: With Readings, Questions and Examination Papers This little work seems to need a preface to excuse its appearance, since it may be thought that I have already written enough, and more than enough, upon the subject of bibliographical classification. Two years ago I gathered into a volume, Canons of Classification, a series of essays in which I stated in concentrated form what I considered to be the principles underlying the construction of a book classification, and then focussed them upon the four schemes most generally in use in libraries. I hoped for a small circle of readers; but to my surprise the work received a comparatively wide welcome, and achieved what is not exactly usual with library manuals written by Englishmen, a circulation in America. The present volume does not make the Canons supererogatory; on the contrary that work, with all its imperfections, and, it may be, fallacies, is the best work I have done or am likely to do upon classification. One outcome of it, however, has been the criticism that in it I took too much for granted, that I presumed in my readers a certain acquaintance with technical terms, logical reasoning, and classification construction generally. That criticism is perhaps just. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk.
