Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Colour Vision HE vast literature on colour vision consists almost entirely of papers written in support of some particular theory. It is peculiarly difficult to obtain a general and unbiassed view of the subject. I have here endeavoured to separate the best established facts of colour vision from the theories, and have then discussed the chief theories in the light of these facts. I wish to express my great indebtedness to Sir William Abney, Professor W. Watson, and Dr Myers for their invaluable assistance in a very difficult task, which demands a not inconsiderable knowledge of such diverse subjects as physics, physiology, and psychology. The chief references to the literature have been given in footnotes. The frequent references to Abney are to his Researches in Colour Vision (london, and to V. Helmholtz to his Hand buch der physiologischen Optik. In the latter case each of the three editions contains material which is absent from the others, and the exact reference is given in the footnote. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from Colour-Blindness and Colour-Perception This book is essentially practical. The observations are based on the careful examination of 116 colour-blind persons and of all the recorded cases to which I could obtain access. I should be glad to hear from any colour blind person concerning his views on colour, and the difficulties which he has encountered. I have obtained much valuable information from colour-blind persons relating to facts concerning their colour-perception which they have found inconsistent with the ordinarily accepted views. Excerpt from The Enjoyment and Use of Color In presenting an introduction to the study Of color as used in the arts, this book takes account Of the close rela tion that exists between the laws Of color in physics and the quality Of color tones and combinations in art. It makes use Of the principles Of light and optics as furnishing a sys tematic approach to an otherwise bewildering realm, in sc far as an evident correlation exists between the external physical causes Of color and the subjective aesthetic experi ences. On the basis Of these it presents a progressive series Of experiments with actual colors in order that the studen1 may become familiar by direct personal experience, witl certain typical color effects. A few modifications and com binations Of colors are representative Of nearly all tha commonly occur, so that actual experiment with these fey helps to interpret a wide range. The purpose Of the bool is not primarily to present a new or original theory Of 0010] but to Offer some analyses Of color effects, and to give series Of typical and interpretative experiments, togethe with references to examples in nature and art. Excerpt from The Physiology of Vision: With Special Reference to Colour Blindness This book is the result of numerous researches on vision and Colour-vision, the principal original papers of which are given at the end of the volume, and present the subject in a new aspect. It will be noticed that each section of the subject has been given from the point of view of new facts apart from any theory and so is available for an explanation on any theory. The subjects of vision and colour-vision have been Viewed too much from the point of View of theory and the primary assumption is made that the theory is true when this can be easily shown not to be the case, as for instance long papers on induction when there is no induction and the classification of colour blindness as red blindness, green blindness, etc., when this classification is so meaningless that a man may be classified by one observer as a case of complete red blindness and by another as a case of complete green blindness.
