The long-closed stock market of South Korea opened its doors to foreign investors in January 1992. Due to the success of the Korean economy during the past two decades, the country provides many new and exciting opportunities for foreign investors. This is the first book published in the United States that provides a comprehensive coverage of the Korean securities market. In addition to the structure and trading system of the Korean securities market, the other topics covered range from the Korean economy to a performance analysis of the stock market during the past ten years. The book starts with a discussion of the economic development of South Korea since 1962, which gives an overall picture of the history and current status of the Korean economy. A historical review of the Korean securities market is the next topic, followed by in-depth coverage of administration, laws and taxes, and the trading system of the Korean securities market. A financial analysis of the listed companies and descriptive comments on each industry are provided in chapters 9, 16, and 17. Some miscellaneous topics are covered in the later chapters. These topics include the over-the-counter market, securities financing, securities investment trust, and investment advisory business.

The revised and updated 7th edition of this highly regarded book brings the reader right up to speed with the latest financial market developments, and provides a clear and incisive guide to a complex world that even those who work in it often find hard to understand. In chapters on the markets that deal with money, foreign exchange, equities, bonds, commodities, financial futures, options and other derivatives, the book examines why these markets exist, how they work, and who trades in them, and gives a run-down of the factors that affect prices and rates. Business history is littered with disasters that occurred because people involved their firms with financial instruments they didn't properly understand. If they had had this book they might have avoided their mistakes. For anyone wishing to understand financial markets, there is no better guide.

(Cont.) the overall situation in leading global countries-specifically, United States. It ultimately delivers recommendations for government policy and investment strategies in Korea and discusses economic modeling aimed at providing guidelines on how to successfully introduce a new private equity market in a certain country to serve as a resource allocation system. Through this thesis, I found that Korea's venture capital industry made an unprecedented economic improvement on the basis its economic recovery after the Korean financial crisis and the introduction of government supporting programs and the KOSDAQ stock market. The KOSDAQ stock market created the third largest market capitalization in the world emerging stock markets. In just eight years, this emerging stock market became a leading trading center in OECD countries due to government driven policies of the previous 22 years. It stimulated the shifting of economic growth engines from large firms to small technology firms in Korea. But after the IT bubble collapsed in 2000, it also experienced long re-adjustment period. Korea's venture capital market seems to have entered into a transitional period from the more government driven system, characterized by corporate venture capital firms, to a market driven system, characterized by limited partnerships, from which the US venture capital market evolved in the 1980s. The Korean venture capital market seems to be about 20 years behind the US market in terms of its economic maturity. The current Korean market situation is similar to that of the American market in the early 1980s ...

divAs trade flows expanded and trade agreements proliferated after World War II, governments—most notably the United States—came increasingly to use their power over imports and exports to influence the behavior of other countries. But trade is not the only way in which nations interact economically. Over the past two decades, another form of economic exchange has risen to a level of vastly greater significance and political concern: the purchase and sale of financial assets across borders. Nearly $2 trillion worth of currency now moves cross-border every day, roughly 90 percent of which is accounted for by financial flows unrelated to trade in goods and services—a stunning inversion of the figures in 1970. The time is ripe to ask fundamental questions about what Benn Steil and Robert Litan have coined as “financial statecraft,” or those aspects of economic statecraft directed at influencing international capital flows. How precisely has the American government practiced financial statecraft? How effective have these efforts been? And how can they be made more effective? The authors provide penetrating and incisive answers in this timely and stimulating book. /DIV
