Urban Water II is the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on the Design, Construction, Maintenance, Monitoring and Control of Urban Water Systems. The meeting was reconvened following the success of the first conference held in the New Forest, home to the Wessex Institute of Technology in 2012. Water systems in the urban environment consist of supply networks as well as sewage and storm drainage systems. They interact with each other and with warm bodies such as rivers, lakes and aquifers, and this interaction affects the quality and quantity of the different systems. As our cities continue to expand, their urban infrastructure must be re-evaluated and adapted to new requirements related to the increase in population and the growing areas under urbanisation. New water systems are also required to reduce the risk associated with floods, network failures and many others related to inadequate networks. New systems should reduce economic losses and environmental impacts as well as promote a higher degree of reliability. Improved management, measurement and control mechanisms are needed to ensure the efficiency and safety of urban water systems. Topics such as contamination and pollution discharges in urban water bodies, as well as the monitoring of water recycling systems are currently receiving a great deal of attention from researchers and professional engineers working in the water industry. Architects and town planners are also aware of the importance of the interaction between urban water cycles and city planning and landscaping. Management of all these aspects requires the development of specialised computer tools that can respond to the increased complexity of urban water systems. Relating to the subject areas of Water supply networks and Urban Drainage, topics covered include: Leakage and losses; Modelling and experimentation; Safety and security of water systems; Maintenance and repairs; Water quality; Water savings and reuse; Surface water and groundwater sources; Reservoirs; Network design; Waste water treatment and disposal; Structural works and infrastructure; Water quality issues; Combined sewer networks; Flood control; Storage tanks; Environmental impact; Domestic and industrial waste water issues.

Fluid-dynamic noise in hydraulic systems has gained high attention in the last decades due to the increasing requirements of vibration and noise reduction in many fields. Usually the most significant sound sources in the system are fluid machines such as centrifugal pumps, in which flow pulsations are generated with amplitude that depends on the operating conditions (velocity and flow-rate). The resulting pres-sure fluctuations induced at a given frequency and position along the pipes also depend on the acoustic response of the system, i.e., on how the acoustic pulsations are transmitted or reflected at each system component, including the pump itself. Therefore, the direct meas-urement of pressure pulsations in a pipeline of a test pump does not directly reflect the acoustic properties of the pump itself, because the coupling effects of the hydraulic system, which can even cause standing waves, may be seriously misleading.

The Symposium was aimed at the theoretical and numerical problems involved in modelling the dynamic response of structures which have uncertain properties due to variability in the manufacturing and assembly process, with automotive and aerospace structures forming prime examples. It is well known that the difficulty in predicting the response statistics of such structures is immense, due to the complexity of the structure, the large number of variables which might be uncertain, and the inevitable lack of data regarding the statistical distribution of these variables. The Symposium participants presented the latest thinking in this very active research area, and novel techniques were presented covering the full frequency spectrum of low, mid, and high frequency vibration problems. It was demonstrated that for high frequency vibrations the response statistics can saturate and become independent of the detailed distribution of the uncertain system parameters. A number of presentations exploited this physical behaviour by using and extending methods originally developed in both phenomenological thermodynamics and in the fields of quantum mechanics and random matrix theory. For low frequency vibrations a number of presentations focussed on parametric uncertainty modelling (for example, probabilistic models, interval analysis, and fuzzy descriptions) and on methods of propagating this uncertainty through a large dynamic model in an effi cient way. At mid frequencies the problem is mixed, and various hybrid schemes were proposed. It is clear that a comprehensive solution to the problem of predicting the vibration response of uncertain structures across the whole frequency range requires expertise across a wide range of areas (including probabilistic and non-probabilistic methods, interval and info-gap analysis, statistical energy analysis, statistical thermodynamics, random wave approaches, and large scale computations) and this IUTAM symposium presented a unique opportunity to bring together outstanding international experts in these fields.
