Exploring what can be learnt when literary critics in the field of animal studies temporarily direct attention away from representations of nonhuman animals in literature and towards liminal figures like androids, aliens and ghosts, this book examines the boundaries of humanness. Simultaneously, it encourages the reader both to see nonhuman animals afresh and to reimagine the terms of our relationships with them. Examining imaginative texts by writers such as Octavia Butler, Philip K. Dick, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jeanette Winterson and J. M. Coetzee, this book looks at depictions of androids that redefine traditional humanist qualities such as hope and uniqueness. It examines alien visions that unmask the racist and heteronormative roots of speciesism. And it unpacks examples of ghosts and spirits who offer posthumous visions of having-been-human that decenter anthropocentrism. In doing so, it leaves open the potential for better relationships and futures with nonhuman animals.

In this sequel to the Rise of the Human Androids, lizard like aliens called the Sharptors have perfected high-energy shields for hyperspace travel and begun exploring the galaxy. Meanwhile, James decides to not run for re-election for President of Mars. He plans instead to search the galaxy for old ones technology in a heavy cruiser with a supergun named after his wife. His wife and two children will join him on this journey. Susan, Mars' Secretary of State and former President of the U.S. will run for James' spot and James' adopted human android daughter Martha will run for vice-president. James' actions are motivated by the re-emergence of Ergone as the Marshall of the powerful and independent Altararian military. James knows Ergone wants to avenge his loss to Mars and Earth in their last war. James fears the Altararians with their vastly superior forces will crush Mars if he can't find advanced technology to stop them. In a chance meeting, James encounters the Sharptors while looking at a promising planet for exploration. A fight breaks out. James wins the encounter but the Sharptor warship escapes. Still, a plan begins to emerge in James' mind of how to use the aggressive new aliens against the Altararians. Meanwhile James and his associates explore an old ones site on their promising new earth like world Sisney 1. They must battle a super aggressive mammal the Ratang and insect the Botos, which have stripped Sisney 1 of almost all of its land animal life as they explore the site. They find new technology at the site, which they plan to use against the Altararians. Meanwhile a secret organization called the Committee, which has controlled many economic events on Earth, finds it difficult to control Mars and its allied planets. As a result, to make themselves relevant in the changing world around them, they join with bigoted groups on Mars and Ganymede and in a secret deal with the Altararians to sabotage Mars efforts to arm itself against the expected Altararian invasion. Many characters on Earth, Mars and Ganymede battle this super secret group in their efforts to prepare Mars for the Altararian invasion. All these forces clash as Mars struggles to survive its confrontation with the Altararians and preserve its Utopian World of human androids and human immigrants.

Androids & Aliens is Scott's third short story collection - eight sci fi and sci-fantasy shorts that run the gamut from cyborgs to (comedic) alien invasions: Rise: The rise in sea levels caused by climate change swallowed Venice beneath the lagoon half a century ago. But what if we could bring it back? Ping: I was a real estate agent by day, and a museum curator in the evening at a sci-fi museum. What I saw one night changed everything. What the Rain Brings: Miriam struggles to make a living in post-climate-change Vancouver. But her friend Catalina has it even worse in the Arizona desert. So Miri hatches a plan. High Seven: Zan dreams of making full reals - immersive live virtual reality skins - but his low score may doom him to a life of cheap coding. Full Real: Dek's given up his life of spying for the city. But one more case awaits him. Will he regret it more if he takes it, or turns it down? Shit City: The Bay Area is being walloped by a hurricane, and seventeen-year-old Jason Vasquez has been relocated to a refugee city in the Nevada Desert. Will it be temporary shelter, or change his life? Firedrake: Kerry has always wondered about his deadly powers. But a mysterious bunch of violet roses starts him on the path to discovery - even if he's not sure he's going to like what he finds. The Last Human Heart: I'm one of the Remainers, the few cyborg humans still living on this busted planet. But if my still-human heart finally gives out, I may not live to find out the truth about who I am. This is the first time all of these stories have all been collected in one place, and the first publication of the Pacific Climate Tryptich - What the Rain Brings, High Seven, and Full Real - in any form.

“An incisive critical work” that looks at Octavia Butler’s writing, the movies of the Matrix and Alien series—and more—through a feminist lens (Femspec). Feminist thinkers and writers are increasingly recognizing science fiction’s potential to shatter patriarchal and heterosexual norms, while the creators of science fiction are bringing new depth and complexity to the genre by engaging with feminist thewories and politics. This book maps the intersection of feminism and science fiction through close readings of science fiction literature by Octavia E. Butler, Richard Calder, and Melissa Scott and the movies The Matrix and the Alien series. Patricia Melzer analyzes how these authors and films represent debates and concepts in three areas of feminist thought: identity and difference, feminist critiques of science and technology, and the relationship among gender identity, body, and desire, including the new gender politics of queer desires, transgender, and intersexed bodies and identities. She demonstrates that key political elements shape these debates, including global capitalism and exploitative class relations within a growing international system; the impact of computer, industrial, and medical technologies on women’s lives and reproductive rights; and posthuman embodiment as expressed through biotechnologies, the body/machine interface, and the commodification of desire. Melzer’s investigation makes it clear that feminist writings and readings of science fiction are part of a feminist critique of existing power relations—and that the alien constructions (cyborgs, clones, androids, aliens, and hybrids) that populate postmodern science fiction are as potentially empowering as they are threatening.
