All the townships of the Matapedia Valley are easy of aecess, by means of the Intercolonial railway which follows the banks of the Matapedia river for about forty miles and puts the sett'ers in direct communication with the great centres of Quebec, Montreal, St. John (New-Brunswick) and Halifax (Nova Scotia). j)--Baie des Chaleurs Region This vast region is the eastern extremity of the Province of Quebec. It measures 7,753 square miles or 4,961,921 acres. The cultivated zone comprises as yet, with three or four exceptions, merely a strip of the north shore of the Baie des Chaleurs, which barely exceeds two or three ranges. Colonization Statisties In the table below will be found a recapitulation of the work done on Colonization roads from 1888 to the 30th June 1915. It will be observed that, since 1908, the Government contributions have considerably inereased and, during those seven years, have been $227,000,00 on an average, although the amount paid in 1913-14 was above the average, namely: $249,545,47, while the average for the period from 1900 to 1908, was $128,000,00. From 1867 to 1888, as may be seen by the table below, the Government contributed, towards the making and maintenance of colonization roads, an amount of $2,001,610,00, which, added to that given from 1888 to 1915, say $3,872,393,97, makes a grand total of $5,574,003,97, Recapitulation of Work done on Colonization Roads, from July, 1888 to 30th June, 1915.
