The most important body of regulations in the area of Antarctic law is the Antarctic Treaty System, also referred to as ATS. The ATS is a unique suite of international legal instruments that regulate the actions of member states (countries) in the areas out of 60-degrees South latitude and regulate international relations with respect to Antarctica, Earth's only continent without a native human population. For the purposes of the treaty system, Antarctica is defined as all of the land and ice shelves south of 60-degrees latitude. The treaty, which entered into force in 1961 and was eventually signed by 47 countries, sets aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve, establishes freedom of scientific investigation, and bans military activity on that continent. The Antarctic Treaty Secretariat headquarters have been located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, since September 2004. The book will benefit legal scholars, environmentalists, and academics who want to learn more about the precious natural reserve of Antarctica and its regulatory system. The selected documents provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the laws and regulations that are relevant to the ATS and its influence.
