Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Antiquities of the Cymry: Or the Ancient British Church; Its History, Doctrine, and Rites The purport of the following pages is to exhibit, in one view, the various features of the ancient Church of Cymru during its metropolitical existence. A work of this nature was always desirable, but the want of it was never, perhaps, so much felt as now, when ecclesiastical antiquities are so generally canvassed among Christians. It is true that we are already in possession of several treatises relative to the religion of our Catholic ancestors; and the learned authors who bequeathed them to us ought not to be mentioned except in terms of respect and gratitude. Still we are free to confess that their researches are not of a form sufficiently systematical, plain, and comprehensive, to suit the cravings and capacities of the ordinary reader. Subjects of main interest only, such as the origin, government, or independence of the Church, have been expressly investigated, whilst particulars, apparently of minor importance, have been left wholly untouched, or but incidentally and subserviently noticed. Some of the writers may have conducted themselves also more as advocates in support of their respective positions, than as candid and impartial historians. Excerpt from Curiosities of the Church: Studies of Curious Customs Services and Records In writing this book, my desire has been not merely to produce an entertaining volume, but One of an instructive character, throwing light on the manners, customs, and everyday life of bygone times, which have a connection with the English church. It would be impossible to prepare a book of this class without having recourse to the works of other authors, more especially some of the older writers. I have tried, however, to render every acknowledgement to those to whom I am indebted for information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Cathedral Antiquities: Historical and Descriptive Accounts, With 311 Illustrations, of the Following English Cathedrals As buildings only they amuse and delight almost every spectator; but associate them with the sublimity and benignity of the Christian religion, and with the amazing ostentation and tyranny of ancient monachism, they awaken the most active curiosity and interest. Yet, strange to say, these wonderful edifices have been hitherto much neglected by the discriminating historian and the antiquary. Each may be said to have its local guide; but this is frequently executed by some illiterate or fulsome panegyrist. The person always, or generally attached to one church, is certainly not well qualified to appreciate its beauties and defects - its real and comparative importance. He usually acquires a common-place and technical mode of commenting on it; and too frequently continues and perseveres in old prejudices and established errors. It will be the endeavour of the present author to explain and correct such things and to offer his criticisms with freedom, but with strict regard to liberality and candour.
