It is intended both as a survey of some contemporary trends in research on marriage and as a foundation for further research. Marriage was historically not only a romantic ideal, but a tool of exploitation of women in many regards. Women were often considered commodities and marriage was far away from the romantic stereotypes people relate to it today. While marriages served as diplomatic tools or means of political legitimization in the past, the discourses about marital relationships changed and women expressed their demands more openly. Discourses about marriage in history and literature naturally became more and more heated, especially during the "long" 19th century, when marriages were contested by social reformers or political radicals, male and female alike. The present volume provides a discussion of the role of marriage and the discourses about in different chronological and geographical contexts and shows which arguments played an important role for the demand for more equality in martial relationships. "Interpretations of what constitutes marriage have changed at state and federal levels, marking a unique time in U.S. history when discourses of marriage are malleable and shifting. With the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold marriage equality, it is timely to inquire about how same-sex married couples experience the impact of these decisions in their everyday lives. By engaging in qualitative interviews with six same-sex married couples that reside in the State of Idaho, participants were asked to reflect on the ways they communicate about marriage. Questions focused on participant couples' perceived similarities and differences in communication about marriage amidst the changing legal discourse of marriage and marriage equality. Through explanations of their own personal experiences of marriage, participants revealed how their understandings of marriage influence and are influenced by larger legal and socio-cultural discourses. Interpretive qualitative analysis of participant interviews revealed a complex and dynamic connection between legal discourses and socio-cultural discourses of marriage that constitute the ways that same-sex married couples make sense of (their own) marriage in addition to the ways that they communicate with others about (their own) marriage. This book explores a novel methodological approach which combines analytical techniques from linguistics and geography to bring fresh insights to the study of poverty. Using Geographical Text Analysis, it maps the discursive construction of poverty in the UK and compares the results to what administrative data reveal.
