This volume is one in a continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, national security, and military systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. Each study is written by a multidisciplinary team of social scientists. Chapter bibliographies appear at the end of the book; brief comments on some of the more valuable sources suggested as possible further reading appear at the end of each chapter. The body of the text reflects information available as of December 1990. Certain other portions of the text, however, have been updated since the information cutoff date: the Introduction, the Country Profile, and the Bibliography. Chapter 1 focuses on historical legacies and social divisions, Uganda before 1900, the Colonial era, independence, military rule under Idi Amin, and Uganda after Amin. Chapter 2 examines Uganda's physical setting, population, ethnic diversity, language, religion, social change, women in society, education, and health and welfare. Chapter 3 looks at the history, growth, and structure of the economy; the role of the government; the labor force; agriculture; industry; tourism; transportation and communications; banking and currency; and foreign trade and assistance. Chapter 4 examines the Ugandan government and politics, including the 10-point program, Constitution, system of government, political dynamics, and foreign relations. Chapter 5 focuses on Uganda's military history, national security since independence, the Armed Forces in society, foreign military assistance, external and internal security concerns, the criminal justice system, and human rights.
