Excerpt from Around the World on a Bicycle: From Teheran to Yokohama During the winter I have examined, as far as circumstances have permitted, the merits and demerits of the different routes to the Pacific Coast, and have decided upon going through Turkestan and Southern Siberia to the Amoor Valley, and thence either follow down the valley to Vladivostok or strike across Mongolia to Pekin the latter route by preference, if upon reaching Irkutsk I find it to be practicable; if not practicable, then the Amoor Valley route from necessity. This route I approve of, as it will not only take me through some of the most interesting country in Asia, but will probably be a more straightaway continuous land-journey than any other. The distance from Teheran to Vladivostok is some six thousand miles, and, well aware that six thousand miles with a bicycle over Asiatic roads is a task of no little magnitude, I at once determine upon taking advantage of the fair March weather to ao complish at least the first six hundred miles of the journey between Teheran and Meshed, one of the holy cities of Persia. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Thomas Stevens (born 24 December 1854, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, died London, 24 January 1935, aged 80) was the first person to circle the globe by bicycle. He rode a large-wheeled Ordinary, also known as a Penny-Farthing, from April 1884 to December 1886. He later searched for Henry Morton Stanley in Africa, investigated the claims of Indian ascetics and became manager of the Garrick Theatre in London. Along the way, Stevens sent a series of letters to Harper's magazine detailing his experiences and later collected those experiences into a two-volume book of which this is Volume II.

On December 17, 1886, Thomas Stevens became the first man to bicycle around the world. The journey took Stevens years to complete, and he logged over 13,500 miles. On April 22, 1884, Stevens set out from San Francisco on a 50-inch black penny-farthing bicycle.€From there, he proceeded to ride across Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and€the entire continental United States, €eventually reaching Boston on August 4, 1884. Due to poor conditions and lack of rideable roads, Stevens had to walk some parts of the journey. He spent the winter in New York, and began contributing essays to Outing magazine. The editors at Outing decided that Stevens should continue his bicycle journey, and they sent him on the City of London Steamer headed to Liverpool. Once in England, Stevens recommenced his journey. Wearing a white military helmet, he crossed through France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slavonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Afghanistan. He traveled through India and took a steamer from Calcutta to Hong Kong. Finally, a steamer delivered Stevens to Japan, where the bicycling portion of his journey ended in December 1886. In January 1887, Stevens returned to San Francisco by steamer. All along the journey, Stevens recorded his thoughts and observations. These notes were published by magazines and were later reformatted to create the book Around the World on a Bicycle.
