Contemporary astrologers claim that their craft is scientifically based and rationally consistent, and above all, that "astrology works" - a belief shared by millions of Americans, including highly visible political and media personalities. As a result, the practice of consulting the stars for advice has never been more popular - or more dangerous. Professional astronomers Roger B. Culver and Philip A. Ianna have produced a highly readable and well-referenced response to the claims of astrologers. This book points out the glaring inconsistencies associated with the basic concepts of "modern" astrology - from the zodiac itself to the fabled "Age of Aquarius." Tracing humanity''s historical fascination with the heavens that produced the celestial "twins" of astronomy and astrology, the authors leave little doubt concerning the difference between astronomical science and astrological art form. Astrology: True or False offers a complete and extensive summary of available evidence on astrology''s basic definitions, concepts, and effectiveness. The authors'' research revealed thousands of predictions gone "bust" - from the start of World War III to claims about the existence of an "anti-Earth" orbiting on the other side of the sun. They studied the famous "twenty-year cycle" of presidential death and disaster, the "moon cycles" of crime and murder in major cities, and the incidences of major personality traits in certain sun signs. Their conclusions, while disappointing to the determined believer in astrology, are nevertheless refreshingly rational.

From the beginning of time, the first astrologers observed the heavens in order to communicate properly with the gods. They believed that the celestial bodies were living gods, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient and eternal. As the ancient astrologers discovered that the movements of the Sun coincide with the changes of the seasons, and the lunar phases influence in tides and floods, then the superstitious, mystical, esoteric, spiritual and religious thought was reinforced. Moreover, the primitive astrologers concluded that the stars (gods) decide the destiny of human beings, moving to convey messages to their legitimate representatives (astrologers, magicians and/or priests). The astrology is a pseudoscience resulting from these ancient beliefs and it hasnt varied considerably in the last 2,000 years.Although human thought has progressively evolved and astrology is based on false superstitious beliefs, to-date the popular astrological practices are extremely successful, because the astrology exploits human curiosity, promises to predict the future and appears to give results with a high level of precision, among other reasons (the fascination with the great existential mysteries, the fear of death, the human needs, the yearnings of succeeding, etc.).In this time, the scientists refute: a) the astrological beliefs, b) the obsolete and incomplete astronomical calculations (performed by astrologers), and c) the astrological explanations and predictions. The modern philosophers question the logic, coherence and rationality of the astrological thought, and also reject the explanatory and predictive capacity of the astrology. While the religious ones state that the astrological beliefs are contrary to the foundations of the monotheistic religions (in opposition with the ideas of new age and postmodern thought).Even more, academics and researchers allege that there is no reliable study that can support the astrology. Rather, the results of various investigations have gone in the other way: these havent been able to test the astrological beliefs and have questioned, objected and/or refuted them. Therefore, the future isnt written in the stars. The astrology is a controversial, questionable, false, anti-religious and anti-Christian pseudoscience, which has no scientific, philosophical and religious foundations.

Alchemists made medicines and pharmaceuticals from the earth’s materials and purified objects through philosophy, magic, and spirituality. Chemistry is based on the material principles of mixed bodies, and spans all natural or physical sciences in its practices. This book on alchemy and chemistry shows the scientific method at work and proves and disproves the subjects at hand. It explores a branch of modern science or a major scientific milestone, comparing and contrasting it with an older idea that has been proved wrong or fails to meet the strict and studied standards of science.

In the first chapters of this book, we simultaneously follow two threads. While considering the lives of Richard Wagner, Friedrich Nietzsche, and King Ludwig II of Bavaria in their nineteenth-century incarnations and in earlier incarnations, we examine the planetary configurations accompanying not only their conception, birth, and death, but also various significant events in their lives. In this way we experience how these two perspectives-the biographical and the astrological-weave together and are intimately interconnected. As illuminating as this is, the author also indicates however that astrological calculation alone can never suffice for the truly deep biographical research into karma and reincarnation demonstrated in this work. The author shows that although it is clear that an individual's destiny is connected with the positions of the celestial bodies-that certain regular occurrences are evident-nonetheless no strict regularities exist. He maintains moreover that a certain level of clairvoyance is requisite for any serious astrological study of destiny; even more-that real astrology requires initiation. Such astrological research, when successfully carried out as it is here, relating salient celestial configurations to the life-drama of well-known historical personalities, reads like fine literature. On a practical level this work illustrates several important new tools for the astrologer: how to calculate hermetic charts, how to cast horoscopes not only of birth and death but also of conception (including the astrological significance of the embryonic period between conception and birth), and then also how to apply these various horoscopes in describing the spiral of life that unfolds in seven-year periods during the course of a person's earthly existence. All this reveals profound and fascinating regularities-among them the discovery that stellar configurations during the embryonic period are reflected again and again in the subsequent periods of life. Quite new for most readers will be the author's treatment of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, indicating that the names given these planets are deeply meaningful in the light of spiritual science. To make his case he extends Rudolf Steiner's description of cosmic evolution by drawing upon Greek mythology, particularly Orphic cosmology. This book by Robert Powell is of the greatest possible interest. Professor Konrad Rudni_ki Astronomical Observatory Jagiellonian University Cracow, Poland
