Shortlisted for the 2018 TWS Wildlife Publication Awards in the edited book category Decomposition and recycling of vertebrate remains have been understudied, hampered largely due to these processes being aesthetically challenging (e.g., smell and sight). Technological innovations have provided the means to explore new and historically understood natural systems to give us a plethora of new information. Carrion Ecology, Evolution, and Their Applications covers a broad spectrum of topics including the molecular mechanistic foundations that provide the basis for intra- and interspecific interactions related to population biology, community ecology, and how this manifests into habitat- and ecosystem-level importance. The book connects the science of carrion decomposition from genes to ecosystems in multidisciplinary synthesis of the science. This book brings together a team of global experts involved with measuring and understanding the process and effects of carrion ecology in nature, with special application in such applied fields as forensic entomology, habitat management, animal production (e.g., livestock and aquaculture), and human and environmental health. It fills a large literature gap in ecology, providing a synthesis and future directions important for studies of carrion decomposition that improve the general understanding of decomposition in ecosystems. The book fuses multiple disciplines into a single message explaining the importance of vertebrate carrion ecology in nature. Illustrates Carrion Decomposition in a 16-Page Color Insert with 40 Photos The authors illustrate how the study of carrion transcends the globe and expands systems of inquiry, broadening awareness of this important ecosystem process. Whether you are a student, academic, or professional, you will find this book insightful for the fields of molecular ecology, microbiology, entomology, forensics, population biology, community and ecosystem ecology, and human and environmental health.

Taking a somewhat traditional viewpoint, this book begins with a review of stationary fields. Then, in a novel departure from many texts on EM theory, the author develops many of the essential ideas in wave propagation by treating purely scalar problems in one, two, and three dimensions. The loss in generality is later recovered when some of the same problems are addressed when vector solutions of Maxwell's equations are required.

Single mode equivalent network representations have been a key tool for the industrial design and development of a large variety of microwave systems. The reduced dimensions and increased complexity of modern microwave equipment, however, makes the inclusion of the higher order mode interactions essential for the correct industrial design and optimization of all microwave hardware. In this context, the analytical techniques originally exploited to develop single mode networks have recently been extended to produce multi-mode algorithms that can form the basis of fast and accurate Computer Aided Design tools. Furthermore, alternative multi-modal techniques, involving resonant rather than guided modes, have recently been developed for the design of waveguide components of arbitrary shape. This book describes in detail a number of modern multi-modal techniques for the analysis and design of passive microwave components. The authors comprehensively cover modal analysis of waveguides and cavities; discuss several multi-mode procedures for the study of both basic and arbitrarily shaped waveguide junctions and, finally, describe specific applications such as inductively coupled filters, waveguide couplers, metal insert and dual-mode filters. The book will be of interest to professional engineers and researchers in the microwave engineering field as well as students engaged in research at an advanced level. Distinctive features of this book include: * detailed explanation of several multi-mode analysis techniques for the analysis of waveguide components based on both canonical and arbitrary waveguide profiles * measured versus simulated results for a number of specific application examples * accompanying software that allows the reader to input their own data thereby demonstrating how the techniques described can be effectively used to develop fast and accurate CAD tools.
