Excerpt from The Russian Revolution: The First Year To understand Russia today one must know a little of Russian history and character. The Romanoff line numbers sovereigns of real genius - Peter the Great, who brought ideas of western civilisation and an imperial future to his people Catherine, who in cynical ambition and ruthlessness rivalled Frederick the Great of Prussia; Alexander the First, 'who alone of the monarchs opposing Napoleon showed real genius, imagination, and idealism. Russian Czars have by a stroke of their autocratic pen liberated the serfs, summoned the nations to Hague Conventions, and abolished vodka drinking. The genius shown by Russian monarchs is reflected in varied forms in the Russian people, which has embraced such contemporary giants as Kropotkin, Metchnikoff, and Tolstoy. The Russian revolution is one of the vital issues of the world today. The political revolt, presenting, as it does, so many unique and dramatic developments, tends to distract the attention of the world from the broader, deeper, and certainly not less important, phases of the movement which are found in the social and eco nomic upheaval. The working out of these forces political, social, economic - in one stupendous move ment, constitutes one of the great revolutions of history. Revolution implies absolute change. Thether civil war, or intense parliamentary struggle, or both, is the method of accomplishment, is of small consequence. The ulti mate outcome is the Same. The present movement of the Russian people toward a changed condition of life is but the manifestation of underlying forces of history and destiny to which all nations must yield. 2021 Reprint of the 1940 Edition. Translated by Bertram D. Wolfe. Facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In this short work the author criticizes the Bolsheviks and presents a prescient warning of their dictatorship. Nonetheless, she continued to call for a "dictatorship of the proletariat", albeit not of the one-party Bolshevik model. In that context, she wrote the words "Freiheit ist immer die Freiheit des Andersdenkenden" ("Freedom is always the freedom of the one who thinks differently") and continues in the same chapter: "The public life of countries with limited freedom is so poverty-stricken, so miserable, so rigid, so unfruitful, precisely because, through the exclusion of democracy, it cuts off the living sources of all spiritual riches and progress". Bolshevik theorists such as Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky responded to this criticism by arguing that Luxemburg's notions were classical Marxist ones, but they could not be applied to Russia of 1917. They stated that the lessons of actual experience such as the confrontation with the bourgeois parties had forced them to revise the Marxian strategy.
