AZULA Being loved by a man was one of the best feelings in the world. But being loved by five at once was even better, no matter how fucked up that love was. Growing up in a trailer park always made me feel different, and the stares and laughs from people who thought my family and home were strange never bothered me. I was happy, but even the happiest people took things too far sometimes, ignoring their limits and not seeing all the red flags lighting up around them. My own happiness slowly broke me as I let those five men show me how much they adored me. I let them destroy me in the best way possible, and ruin me internally simultaneously. When I reached my lowest point and exhaustion took over my body, I didn’t think there’d be a way back to the girl I was before. Never had I thought the five men who ruined me would end up being the ones saving me.

2019 Button Poetry Prize Runner-Up Dear Azula, I Have a Crush on Danny Phantom is a crossover of our coming of age universes. Exploring the interplay of adolescence and media, Dear Azula is a masterclass on how Generation Z see themselves reflected on screen, how they find themselves in characters when the world does not grant them the possibility. These poems pay homage to the cartoon characters who made us the wicked lovestruck people that we are. These ubiquitous stories of teen ghost boys and water bending women gave wonder to a generation raised by recession. In illustrious villains we learned our own glamour. In chiseled chins and 2D teeth we learned desire. In Dear Azula, I Have a Crush on Danny Phantom we bring the early 2000s renaissance of animation into our modern lives to unpack, celebrate, revel, and remember.

Essay from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,8, University of Leipzig (Anglistik), course: Comics and Graphic Novels - A Different Kind Of Literature, language: English, abstract: This essay focuses on the perception and the understanding of the female antagonist Azula in the graphic novel "Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Search". Essential themes that are discussed in coming-of-age stories, e.g., during different political times like wartime and colonialism, can also represent marginalised groups, other religions, abuse, or disabilities, both mental and physical (Garrison). All of these are featured and discussed in the graphic novel "Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Search", a continuation of the same named television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and a prequel to its follow-up "Avatar: The Legend of Korra". "The Search" takes place after the events of "ATLA - The Promise" and is divided into two storylines; one follows past events that led up to the disappearance of Ursa, mother to Azula and Zuko and former wife of the fallen Firelord Ozai; the other is set in the present and accompanies "Team Avatar" on their search for Ursa. Here Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko are joined by his "crazy" and "aggressive" sister Azula, the former crown princess, now locked away in a dungeon. "ATLA - The Search" criticises the ignorant and misogynistic view from Asian cultures on the concept of mental illness and their perception of women within their society in the representation of the mad princess Azula through the trauma narrative; it thereby deepens the understanding and perception of her villainised character. Over the course of the 21st Century, the graphic novel has experienced a positive dramatic change in contemporary society that has led to its recognition among other types of literature as a unique and rare art form and is also discussed within an academic context. All kinds of different genres are featured in the new text that combines iconographies featuring art and symbols, illustrations, and written text, which can offer especially young adults a specific and provocative perspective. Since the late 1960s, the coming-of-age genre has been a quintessential theme in young adult literature; with time, it developed a more and more realistic portrayal of adolescence by illustrating the harsh realities and complexities of the journey into adulthood and giving developing readers solace and commiseration. Graphic novels can also bridge different cultures and offer the audience a different perspective of growing up by widening their overall knowledge besides their own experiences.

Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14) are among the most acclaimed and influential U.S. animated television series of the 21st century. Yet, despite their elevated status, there have been few academic works published about them. The Avatar Television Franchise: Storytelling, Identity, Trauma, Fandom and Reception remedies this gap by bringing together a wide range of scholarly writings on these shows. This edited collection is comprised of 13 chapters organized into 4 sections, featuring close readings of key episodes, analyzing how they create meaning as well as illustrating how established theories can guide those readings. Some chapters explore different theories relating to identity as well as considering the repercussions of depicting real-world identities in these shows, while others examine the various manifestations of trauma from throughout the franchise as well as illustrates different scholarly approaches to the topic. Still others utilize fan studies to understand the myriad ways viewers have responded to and interpreted the Avatar franchise.
