The Basic Industrial Math Course is designed to teach and review the essential math principles used every day in the automotive shop. The online course uses modular instruction and practice, split into six fundamental areas of mathematical function. ? Addition and Subtraction This unit defines whole numbers, numerals, digits, decimals, place value, addends, sums, minuends, subtrahend, and difference. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Differentiate between concrete and abstract numbers Explain the significance of the digit zero Properly prepare numbers to perform addition and subtraction in different mathematical circumstances Multiplication and Division This unit defines factors, multiplicands, multipliers, partial products, products, dividends, divisors, quotients, and remainders. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Perform multiplication and division on whole numbers, decimal numbers, and mixed decimal numbers Find averages and recognize the various signs used for multiplication and division Properly prepare numbers to perform multiplication and division in different mathematical circumstances Fractions, Percentages, Proportions, and Angles This unit defines fractions, proper fractions, improper fractions, lowest common denominators, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions Change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions Solve problems including ratios, equivalent ratios, percentages, and proportions Use a protractor and lay out templates when working with angles Metric System This unit defines the base units most commonly used in the metric system and identifies what they're used to measure. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Identify metric prefixes and apply conversion factors to create a unit that's larger or smaller than the base unit Estimate lengths in metric units, and express temperature in degrees Celsius Define the terms mass, density, force, torque, and pressure, and identify the metric units used to measure each one Use a conversion table to convert metric units to English units and English units to metric units Formulas This unit prepares students to use formulas to solve problems and explain and demonstrate the use of variables in formulas. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Use formulas to calculate the perimeter of a triangle and a rectangle, and the area of a triangle, a rectangle, and a circle Use formulas to calculate distance, current in a circuit, and the volume of a pyramid and a sphere Transform and solve equations and formulas and find square roots Substitute given numerical values for letters in a formula and find the unknown quantity Introduction to Algebra This unit prepares students to perform basic arithmetic operations with signed numbers and explains the difference between positive and negative numbers, demonstrating their uses. Additionally, it defines terms, constants, coefficients, exponents, monomials, trinomials, and polynomials. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: Use the order of operations for solving problems involving multiple operations Identify and combine like terms in an expression Raise a number to any power and multiply and divide terms containing exponents ? This course is the perfect supplement to any area of auto technician training. Giving automotive students the basic knowledge and understanding needed for more advanced automotive courses and training, the course serves as a necessary baseline in automotive education. Whether using this course as an introduction to the field or as a refresher, students benefit from learning the practical use of each module in the real world and become more prepared to apply these skills in the shop.

This book is devoted to some analytical and numerical methods for analyzing industrial problems related to emerging technologies such as digital image processing, material sciences and financial derivatives affecting banking and financial institutions. Case studies are based on industrial projects given by reputable industrial organizations of Europe to the Institute of Industrial and Business Mathematics, Kaiserslautern, Germany. Mathematical methods presented in the book which are most reliable for understanding current industrial problems include Iterative Optimization Algorithms, Galerkin's Method, Finite Element Method, Boundary Element Method, Quasi-Monte Carlo Method, Wavelet Analysis, and Fractal Analysis. The Black-Scholes model of Option Pricing, which was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Economics, is presented in the book. In addition, basic concepts related to modeling are incorporated in the book. Audience: The book is appropriate for a course in Industrial Mathematics for upper-level undergraduate or beginning graduate-level students of mathematics or any branch of engineering.

We often hear about the need to make demands on all students, especially those of color, of different cultural backgrounds, and from low income families. A lot of educators talk the talk, but only a few have actually walked the walk. One of the few American schools that actually made substantial strides in improving education for low-income students was Garfield High school in the 1980s. The success of Jaime Escalante, Garfield's calculus teacher, was depicted in the 1987 film Stand and Deliver. This film is often shown in education classes and teacher inservices. Unfortunately, Hollywood played rather freely with the facts and created a film that is a poor guide for teachers and administrators who want to recreate Escalante's experience. The reality, however, is even more wonderful than the film, and, unlike the Hollywood fantasy, is replicable. When coauthor Jerry Jesness interviewed Jaime Escalante about the secret of his success, the first four words Escalante spoke were, 'Our principal, Henry Gradillas_ .' In this book, Dr. Gradillas shares both his upbeat philosophy of education and the practical school management techniques that helped translate that philosophy into success for thousands of students over three decades. The book focuses on three areas that are key to the operation of an effective school: School climate, instruction, and curriculum. It includes many references to the Garfield experience, as well as to other schools where Gradillas was at the helm.
