Meet the hostesses who have shaped cocktail history, and learn how to make the drinks they loved. Throughout American history, women have helped propel what we know as classic cocktails—the Martini, the Manhattan, the Old-Fashioned, and more—into popular culture. But, often excluded from private clubs, women exercised this influence from the home, in their cocktail parlors. In The Cocktail Parlor, Dr. Nicola Nice, sociologist and spirits entrepreneur, gives women their long-overdue spotlight in cocktail history and shows how they still impact cocktail culture today. Journeying through the decades, this book profiles a diverse array of influential hostesses. With each historic era comes iconic recipes, featuring a total of 40 main cocktails and more than 100 variations that readers can make at home. Whether its happy hour punch a la Martha Washington or a Harlem Renaissance–inspired Green Skirt, readers will find that many of the ingredients and drinks they’re familiar with today wouldn’t be here without the hostesses who served them first.

A complete reproduction of the Vintage Cocktail Book "The Ideal Bartender" originally published in 1917. Tom Bullock became to be a well-recognized bartender of the time at St. Louis Country Club, where he served for government officials and other elite members. G.H. Walker, grandfather of George W. Bush was one of the big fans of Bullock's cocktails and wrote the indroduction. After publishing this cocktail book, Prohibition made Bullock's profession illegal, yet bartending culture was stronger than ever, bartenders were well paid and tipped for supplying public a illegal substance of alcohol. Bullock moved frequently and changed professions during the dry period, but kept bartending at St. Louis Country Club where people could still drink. Bobrow freshens up classic cocktail recipes and offers a few recipes that will surely become classics themselves. Finally, we, whiskey drinkers, have our own cocktail book to cherish. Thanks, Warren, for skipping all those other spirits. Whiskey Cocktails treats whiskey as the rightful king it is. - Fred Minnick, author of Whiskey Women: The Untold Story of How Women Saved Bourbon, Scotch & Irish Whiskey "Warren has done it again. Whiskey Cocktails is a sublime journey of the senses with mouthwatering recipes and exquisite photography. Warren leads you on a historic and personal tour and keeps you reeled in with his graceful prose that emanates from the heart. His cocktail compositions are true works of art that will stand the test of time. His commitment to sourcing unique, refreshing, quality ingredients to enhance his cocktails is second to none and it shows in the elaborate, delectable concoctions he wields." - Robert Sickler, Master of Whisky "Before I made the drinks, I could already taste them. Warren's ability to articulate the subtlety of the flavors in his recipes makes possible tasting by reading." - Allison Goldberg, founder, Fruitations Craft Soda & Cocktail Mixers "Warren Bobrow uses his great knowledge of mixing flavors to provide a book of extraordinary whiskey cocktails that will be enjoyed by all." - Michael Veach, bourbon historian, The Filson Historical Society (Louisville, KY)
