Twofold nature lstly, to provide the young Student with a description of our native plants, arranged according to the simplest method; and 2dly, to afiord to the more experienced Botanist, a manual, that should be useful in the field as well as in the closet. In regard to the first object, the experience of nearly an hundred years has proved to every unprejudiced mind, that no system has appeared which can be compared to that of the immortal Swede for the faciliq with which it enables any one, hitherto unprac tised in Botany, to arrive at a knowledge of the Genus and Species of a plant. - The Linnaean Method is, therefore, here still, though not exclusively, adopted. Excerpt from British Wild Flowers: Illustrated The vegetable kingdom is naturally divided into two great sec tions, the plants of which, while exhibiting for the most part con siderable differences in internal structure, are more, remarkably distinguished by the mode in which they propagate their kind. Those of one division possess no distinct flowers or seeds in which the germ of the future plant is enveloped, but multiply by means of minute cellular bodies called spores. Those of the other have distinct floral organs and produce seeds properly so called. The former section, called by botanists Cryptogamia, includes Ferns, Mosses, Lichens, Seaweeds and Fungi, with some other vegetables not comprised under these designations; the latter, the Phanero gamia or Flowering Plants, to the British species of which our present book alone refers. A plant, in this, its more highly developed form, usually consists of four distinct parts, which, while' they are all modifications of the same organic type, consisting of cells and vessels variously arranged, have yet very different offices assigned them in the oeconomy of Nature. They are the root, stem, leaves, and flower. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Handbook of the British Flora: A Description of the Flowering Plants and Ferns Indigenous to or Naturalized in the British Isles, for the Use of Beginners and Amateurs When revising the fourth edition of my late friend's Hand book of the British Flora, I abstained from making other additions or alterations than appeared to me to be absolutely necessary, and consistent with the object of the work, which is, as stated in the title-page, for the use of beginners and amateurs. In the Preface to the first, 1858, but in no sub sequent edition, Mr. Bentham explained his motives for pre senting his work to the public, and the method he followed in preparing it: and inasmuch as he therein gives his reasons for adopting a different treatment of British plants from what obtains in other works devoted to our native Flora, it appears to me to be expedient, now that the editorship has passed into other hands, to repeat what he there says in his own words. Excerpt from Manual of British Botany: Containing the Flowering Plants and Ferns Arranged According to the Natural Orders In this work it has been the Author's wish to adopt in all cases those names which have the claim of priority, unless good cause could be shown for a contrary proceeding, and with this object he has carefully examined nearly all the best European Floras, comparing our plants with the descriptions contained in them, and in very many cases with foreign specimens of undoubted authenticity. In the adoption of genera and species an endeavour has been made, by the examination of the plants themselves, to determine winch are to be considered as truly distinct, thus, it is hoped, taking Nature as a guide, and not depending upon the authority of any name, however distinguished.
