The prominence of the Temple of Hephaistos, Greek god of metalworkers, situated on a hill to the west of the Agora, reflects the esteem in which bronzeworkers were held by the Athenians. Although many of the objects these craftsmen produced have now been melted down, the statues, lamps, and vessels that remain testify to the high standards of their craftsmanship. As well as illustrating some of the surviving finished products, the author discusses the techniques used to cast bronze and the level of skill involved in producing complex metal statuary.

The Early Iron Age potters' debris published in this volume sheds light on many aspects of pottery production, in prehistory as well as in the Classical and later periods. The material includes test-pieces, wasters and other production discards. There is also a reassessment of the evidence associated with the kiln underlying the later Tholos.

This dissertation traces the developments in shape and decoration of one of the grandest mixing vessels made in Athens from the late seventh century B.C. until the middle of the fourth. The first chapter sketches the background from which the first Attic volute-kraters emerge, as well as discussing ceramic volute-kraters made in other Greek potteries in the sixth century, including Sparta, Corinth, Northern Greece and Reggio di Calabria. The central chapters study the evolution of the volute-krater in the Athenian potters' quarter from the late seventh century until the middle of the fourth. Special attention has been paid to style, patternwork, and profile in order to identify new potters and painters, their interconnections, and their chronological framework. The catalogue lists over six hundred examples in black-figure, red-figure and black glaze. In the second half of the fifth century, local potteries in South Italy were established that imitated Athenian work: the evolution of their earliest volute-kraters and their debt to Attic are described. Volute-kraters were also made in bronze during the archaic and classical period. The development of several types from before the Vix krater until after the Derveni is analysed, and a catalogue of over one hundred given. Brief notes on Neo-Attic marble volute-kraters and volute-kraters in precious metals are appended. The study closes with a discussion and catalogue of representations of volute-kraters.

Diane Harris-Cline employs Actor-Network theory to showcase the intricate web of social relationships behind each gesture that resulted in the deposition of bronzes on the Acropolis. Andronike Makres and Adele Scafuro reflect on methodological quandaries and detail their efforts to produce a new critical edition of the corpus of inscriptions on dedicatory and other bronzes that takes into account the materiality of this epigraphic record. Amy Sowder Koch reviews the corpus of hydriai from the Acropolis, taking into account newly published examples, and situates them within the larger context of bronze hydriai, seeking to understand Athens' role in bronze hydria production.
