Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount ends with the parable of the builders on rock or sand. Doing what Jesus asks results in building a life that endures; not doing it results in disaster. The choice is ours, and it’s a scary one. How can we read these words so that we can know what Jesus meant and do it? In this book, Scripture scholar Dennis Hamm takes an in-depth look at the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, paying special attention to the distinctive ways these two evangelists present and interpret Jesus’ teachings. Hamm helps us to hear Jesus’ words in their original cultural setting as well as in the context of the Old Testament and the Gospels. In doing so, he throws new light on these teachings and suggests what they mean for us today. This book is both informative and pastoral, helping us to realize that the “you” addressed by Jesus in the Sermon is not a lonely individual but a healed and praying community, and that the one we pray to is not a long-ago and faraway Jesus of Nazareth but our living Lord and Friend.

In a world that seems to be turning away from God, author John Onu Odihi writes from his heart about the Christian life and its challenges in the modern era. Even while our culture emphasizes independence and moral relativism, Odihi is unafraid to remind us that our victory can come only through loving and trusting God, and living in obedience to him. Building a Relationship with God and with Others helps us do just that, with essays on such topics as gratitude, patience, and the mystery of God’s love. But the essays go beyond the theoretical to the real dynamics in our relationship not only with God, but also with each other. Reflections on how to live out our Christian faith address forgiveness, encouragement, the value of confession, and ways to cope with fear. You’ll even find an essay on the difficult challenge of how to lovingly confront someone who is in the wrong. Each section is followed by suggested biblical passages that you can return to again and again for support and reference. Throughout this book is an emphasis on the joy and fulfilment that is ours when we learn to truly love not only our neighbours but our enemies—Jesus’ ultimate message as we work to bring his kingdom to this earth. Whether you’re a new Christian or have been one for many years, you’ll welcome this chance to learn more and to deepen your understanding of what it means to walk with God.

Out on the barren margins of Babylonian exile, the great Psalmist suggests their captors are actually asking for a song of joy. Imagine that. Is it possible to sing the Lord's song in a foreign land? Christians today find themselves caught up in the massive sweep of secularizing culture. Do we have a joyful song to sing anymore? Do we know what our song has been throughout history? Could we possibly sing as a mighty choir, just perhaps igniting spiritual renewal for our world--and for each one of us as well? This book proposes the possibility of finding a new song for our time.

To the unstudied eye, Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. Erasmo Leiva here acts as our guide, showing Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the non-technical reader. The tone is very much gustate et videte, quoniam suavis est Dominus [taste and see how good the Lord is]-as it is "friend, come up higher!". The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva points to Matthew's gospel as being deeply ecclesial because it is first Christological. He comments on the Greek text, demonstrating to the reader nuances in the text that defy translation into English without serious revision of the text. Leiva uses linguistic analysis to aid the non-Greek reader with the literal meaning of the text; numerous quotes from the Fathers and the liturgy of the church demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

We crowd out Jesus with self-doubt, problems, sin, and unnecessary pleasures, and we become focused on ourselves. Look around people! We live in a ÒselfieÓ society. We may have all the methods and commandments down of how to be the perfect Christian, but is that what Jesus wants? Does he want us to be an awesome churchgoer or a disciple? Is this the life that Jesus wants us to build? Is this His plan, His purpose for us? Is this what Jesus meant when He told us to take up the Cross and follow Him? I think not. I believe that there is more to the Christian walk with God than just church and religious practices. I believe there is a relationship that God wants us to build with Him that will forever change us. A relationship that matters more than any other relationship in the world. The time is now; will you become unshakeable?
