A first-person account of onboard life with photos and how-to information. Thinking of taking up full-time residence on a boat? Dave Kelley, the former Executive Editor of Boating World magazine, offers an instructive and enjoyable first-person account of onboard life, complete with photos. Aided by his wife, who provides a woman’s perspective, and by his dogs and cat (who “address” a pet’s concerns), Kelley discusses all the important considerations involved in opting for a home port. Find out how to choose the right boat, set up an office, adjust to the limited space, establish a routine, and prepare float plans. Prepare yourself for the costs and special challenges involved in marina life. Interviews with those who have lived at sea reveal why some have returned to land-and why others will never become landlubbers again. • Advertising in Boating magazines

'It would make the stones cry to hear those on board shrieking' - Daniel Buckley, third-class passenger For the first time, in this moving new book, Titanic's passengers and crewmen are permitted to tell the story of that lamentable disaster entirely in their own words. Included are letters, postcards, diary entries and memoirs that were written before, during and immediately after the maiden voyage itself. Many of the pre-sailing documents were composed by people who later lost their lives in the sinking and represent the last communications that these people ever had with their friends and loved ones at home. The subsequent letters and postcards give an unparalleled description of the events that occurred during the five days that Titanic was at sea, and the correspondence by survivors after the tragedy describes the horror of the disaster itself and the heartbreak they experienced at the loss of those they loved. This poignant compilation, by Titanic expert George Behe, also contains brief biographies of the passengers and crewmen, victims, as well as survivors, who wrote the documents in question.

This is the clearest, most fully illustrated version of the navigation rules that every captain must have on board—in fact, boats 12 meters (or 39 feet) and longer are required to carry a copy. For years, the United States Coast Guard has produced a guide to operating vessels safely and lawfully in both international and inland waters. But its language is legalistic, complex, and not always very comprehensible. Chapman’s easy-to-read edition has exactly the same information, but with additional illuminating commentary by Editor-at-Large Dan Fales; an explanation of many of the rules in simple, lucid detail; and advice on real-world application. With eight more illustrations than the Coast Guard’s book, the manual looks better than ever, too. No matter whether you navigate a small sailboat, motorboat, or spacious yacht, you won’t want to head onto the water without it.

Paul Chapman is the founder and former director of the Center for Seafarers' Rights, a division of the Seamen's Church Institute. He shares the stories he has been told by seafarers subjected to shocking mistreatment who had nowhere else to turn. The ships to which they reported were decrepit and unseaworthy. The owners of bankrupt shipping ventures abandoned the ship and crew half a world away from their homes. There was not enough food. There was not enough fresh water. The living quarters were filthy and overcrowded. Problems faced by seafarers are exacerbated by a common strategy of hiring crew members thirty-five or forty countries to minimize the possibility that crew members will protest working conditions or contract violations. Without a common language and without access to legal advice, seafarers cannot effectively protest harassment, unsafe conditions, or the withholding of wages.

When Ellie's fiance cheats on her with a younger, slimmer, blonde from the office, she boots him out of her life and finds solace in a fabulous photography job aboard a Caribbean cruise ship. Twenty-four hours on board and she's already shagged her sexy Texan colleague, who happens to love her muffin-top. Unfortunately, he's leaving in a week, and his ex-girlfriend, a hot-headed Brazilian with stripper moves right out of the 90s and a talent for stealing boyfriends, is still on board and out for revenge. Ellie must work out how to deal with the loco ex, sort the lying scumbags from the good guys, and figure out how many crew members in a cabin it takes before officially becoming group sex. Who the hell knows? (It's five, actually.) It's a world completely unlike the one she left behind, but as she tries to find her place on board, Ellie discovers laughter and tears in equal measure. And in the midst of the craziness, she realises the greatest thing this lifestyle change has given her is the chance to rediscover herself."
