Excerpt from Chapters in Modern Botany This little book makes no attempt to condense a survey of its science; even within the fields through which it passes it seeks only to be suggestive, not exhaustive; its chapters have actually grown out of the syllabus and notes of University Extension Lectures, with their necessary limitations. In matter and form its appeal is to the general reader; yet, in method and spirit, to the student also, - in some measure even to the teacher. In botany, as in other studies, educational methods alter with the times. In the Linnean period the "best botanist was he who knew the most plants," however little of each; while a later and still dominant school has founded upon Cuvier a type-system which makes him know much, - but of few. Hence the student has come no longer to load his vasculum and memory in a single vacation, with all things from the cedar to the hyssop; but, seeing that cedar and hyssop have been selected as types by the highest authority, scrutinises these, and these only, for his term. Analysis is great, and the anatomist is its prophet; yet such Elementary Biology is but Necrology, its so-called "life-histories" being but histories of form. It is the misfortune of biology that Darwin was not a teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Essentials of College Botany In offering this book to college teachers it may not be amiss to refer to the great change that has taken place in the teaching of Botany in America since the preparation of its predecessor thirty-five years ago. Then botanical laboratories were just coming into existence, and for the first time students of Botany were able to study- protoplasm and cells and tissues and other minute structures of plants. It is a matter of history that half a dozen years later the publisher's objection to the caption Laboratory Studies for a new edition, was able to bring about the substitution of "Practical Studies," as less likely to prejudice teachers against such presentation of the subject. Looking back to that time we realize what progress has been made in the teaching of the science, for to-day every college has its laboratory for the study of plant structure, and this change in teaching has gone so far that it has invaded the secondary schools, in which there are now many well-equipped botanical laboratories. Looking at the science from another standpoint it is of interest to note that thirty-five years ago the number of species of known plants was between 125,000 and 150,000, while to-day it has risen to more than 233,000. Then the number of flowering plants was placed at a little more than 100,000, while now it is about 133,000: then the lower plants ("cryptogams") were thought to number from 25,000 to 40,000, while now there are more than 100,000 enumerated. Excerpt from Elements of Botany It will be found that this book differs from most American text-books designed for use in secondary schools, in endeavor ing to combine in one volume the simplest possible directions for laboratory work with an outline of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and a brief statement of the principles of botani cal classification. An account of the functions of the tissues or organs described usually follows as closely as may be the account of the parts in question. The attempt is made to disciiss' plants dynamically rather than statically, to view them as contestants in the struggle for existence, and to con sider some of the conditions of success and failure in the vegetable world. While the determination of species by means of an artifical key is illustrated, preparation for this process is by no means the main object or even a principal end which the author has had in view. The tendency of botany-teaching seems to be more and more away from the old ideal of enabling one's pupils to run down a species as expeditiously as possible, and teaching them how to preserve a properly ticketed memento of the chase.
